Bug on latest Windows patch? (Version 1.17.0.1709); Certain movies and shows not playing. Please help!

Server Version#: 1.17.0.1709
Player Version#: Latest on any platform

Ok, so I recently discovered an anomaly the other day. I have been unable to play certain Movies and TV shows. I have tried via Web App (Win10), Roku (3 & Ultra), & LG). I’ve refreshed the metadata on the show, removed it from the database, re-added and nothing.

I’ve also attempted to “repair” the program, nothing.

Just for the sake of it I created a secondary server for testing purposing on Linux and the show played absolutely fine. Which of course makes me think that there is something wrong with my Win10 server.

Before I start completely rebuilding the server, I’m hoping for some tips.

Thank you in advance.

I am having the same issue on my I3 based system. Worked PERFECT for a year prior to this update. Now 90% of my videos wont play. They either wont load, cut off completely after a few seconds with no error or play with no audio. Nothing but issues. It’s a newer PC so I actually returned it to the store and swapped it for a replacement thinking something was wrong with the pc but even after a brand new computer / fresh install I am having the same issue. Works fine on my super powerful i9 based windows machine though.

Things to try:

  1. Update Windows
  2. disable Hardware Transcoding
  3. Manually download the PMS installer, then uninstall and re-install, like so:
  • Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
  • deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows (do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.)
  • for safety, reboot Windows
  • download the installation exe of the newer version and install it

(If you want to install an older version of PMS, take a look into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates)

@OttoKerner: It was successful for me after I disabled the Hardware Trans-coding. After I turned it back on it was still stuck. Which means now it looks like there is something wrong with my P2000. Maybe the drivers.

I’ll report back.

If you encounter crashes, please zip up the Logs folder and the crash dumps and post them here.

@OttoKerner: After further investigation, it was the drivers. I went into Device Manager and forced it to update the drivers. Once complete I played the file and it worked just fine!

Thank you for the additional steps that I was not thinking of.

Im running a GTX 960 and the drivers are up to date, however when i disable hardware acceleration, the videos play. its not the drivers for me…unless nvidia muffed up their 9/10/2019 driver update.

thoughts?

@soapbox3000, so I originally upgraded the drivers via the Nvidia website, which I believe is what broke it. But when I updated it via the Windows Device Manager, it fixed it.

Give that a shot.

I noticed the same issue after updating to the latest version of PMS. I rolled it back one iteration and now my videos are loading fine again. I have the latest driver updates for my RTX nvidia card. It seems like the latest PMS install broke something where it can’t transcode video with hardware acceleration.

Reverting to the previous version fixed it for me!

I hope a Plex employee will see this post. I noticed that I seem to have an issue transcoding MPEG4 files using hardware acceleration. But when either I reverted to an older version or turn off hardware acceleration in the newer version, I can see the video.

Yeah but still something is majorly broken if we have to revert to an older version to be able to watch videos. It needs to be addressed

Having this issue too on Windows 10 1909 with the NVIDIA Standard 436.430 drivers.
Have turned off hardware transcoding for now, but hope this is fixed soon.

Having this issue too on Windows 10 1903 with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 (have latest Nvidia driver updates installed). Seems to only happen with .AVI files. Rolling back the Server version from 1.17.0.1709 to 1.16.6.1592 worked for me. For now, I’m skipping the 1709 until the issue is fixed.

While rolling back is understandable, Window’s doesn’t make GPU driver installation reliable. The posts here are evidence.

So not only is the solution driver >= 418.30, maybe it’s also the walkthrough from cafe_diem that you need: No Nvidia P400 decode acceleration with 1.17.0.1709

Use the information from your log files to narrow down your issue of course.
This OP had driver problems. Others may have MalwareBytes.
Just proceed logically.

Installing latest Nvidia driver update (436.48) worked for me on the latest Plex Server update (1.18.0.1846).

Is that an issue also?

MalwareBytes has been known to cause the following

And for stutters they mentioned Bitdefender or other AV software in
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201575036-why-is-my-video-stream-buffering/

And for crashes it’s assorted dll files:

Good question! Some great news is that the latest beta PMS-1.18.0.xxxx has fixed a ton of windows problems. A lot of happy testers are out there now.

I’m also having the same issues, hardware transcoding on, certain files won’t play, hardware transcoding off, and the files play just fine. Windows 10 1903 with a NVIDIA GTX 1080 - 436.48. I’m not sure if you need anything else from me to help, but reproduce or diagnose the issue.

Hello optimus506. The new beta version of Plex Media Server (1.18.0.1846) has solved a lot of problems on Windows. You might want to give that one a try. It has some major changes to music. So read about it before you dive in, or just wait for a new stable in a couple of weeks.
