Windows 10 1909

Last Saturday I made the mistake of updating my Plex server to the latest version of Plex and also updating Windows to the 1909 release. Since then I would click on a channel in live TV and watch the tray icon for Plex go away while I received a playback error on the a second PC which I was using the guide from. I would click on Plex from the start menu and I could repeat this process. While in this state, nothing, live TV, recorded TV or stored movies and TV will play. Also received messages saying secured connections failed and asking to use unsecure connections. At one point, all my libraries disappeared.

Any know issues with Windows 10 1909? I am thinking of backing 1909 out and see if it reverts to working.

Thanks.

You may want to check your Windows Firewall configuration on the server. I also upgraded my Windows 10 VM to 1909 this weekend. I checked just now and the firewall was enabled; I usually keep it disabled. In my case, this prevented PMS from discovering/communicating with my HDHomeRun which was previously configured. I didn’t notice immediately since I only use this server for testing occasionally.

Note: I’m not necessarily suggesting you disable the firewall permanently. But it may be useful as a troubleshooting step. If it works, you can then inspect your rules to ensure the correct ones are in place.

Thanks, good thought. I had firewall rules in place but I stopped the firewall and there was no change in behavior. I do not think it is the firewall since I can generally connect it is only when I go to play something that it crashes. I.E. I see the Plex tray icon disappear and I get playback error, then noting works (because I believe the Plex Media Server has crashed. I then start it again and I can repeat the same cycle at will.

I took Windows back to 1903 and there was no change. The system was originally 1809 so I may take it back to there tonight.

I was going to remove Plex and reinstall but took the repair option and no change. I then upgraded to the next available update of Plex and still no change.

I somehow completely missed the part about PMS actually crashing. That being the case, there are at least a couple other threads discussing this. It appears it may be caused by hardware transcoding:

There may be others.

I tried removing Plex and reinstalling. While I was doing that I cleared the cache directories and I decided oh well, back to 1909 since that did not make a difference. Still crashing as soon as I play media.

So, same computer, some OS and Emby works like a charm. I have been a long time Plex user so I hate to switch but the idea here is convenience and it just isn’t right now.

Any thoughts before I switch for good?

So rolling back my intel driver to 26.20.100.7000 worked for me, and PMS no longer crashes now when Hardware Transcoding.

I turned off hardware transcoding and I can now play videos. I upgrade the driver for my Intel HD Graphics 630 to 26.20…100.7463 (06-Nov-2019) and turned it hardware acceleration back on and the PMS crashed again. So I am running now but without hardware acceleration. I5 Processor runs at about 80%-90% while watching a ripped bluray MKV file.

Emby seems to be working right along side Plex so I may still go that way.

See the post above yours… the latest intel drivers cause a crash. If you use the ones referenced above it should work.

I know, I would rather turn off hardware acceleration than have a unattended driver update get me again at some future date. So I will look for driver updates and see if it gets fixed at some point.

Hey all,

I have seemed to stumble on this myself.
I was working fine, then i updated from 1903 to 1909 amd to the latest PMS all at the same time.
It works fine for 24hrs and then just stops functioning. Plex.tv, or 127.0.0.1 or app.desktop.plex via devices just doesnt work. I quit my app server and restart and it doesnt work either. The only way it will work is if i restart the whole computer.

Any one had further success on the latest windows update and changed any windows settings to make this problem go away?

I upgraded to 1909 back in November and have never had a problem. I did not have to change any settings. If you’re having issues, you may want to download PMS from the site, install it overtop of your existing PMS, and see if that fixes it. Doing it this way will only overwrite the core files, it will not touch your database (I know this for sure) or user settings (if I recall correctly).
