Bug: Plex shows background images as if they were posters on Android TV, Samsung Tizen, and LG WebOS

Server Version#: 1.41.4.9463
Player Version#: 10.26.0.2578

I have some personal media libraries set up with the Other Videos type, using the “Personal Media” agent and the “Plex Video Files Scanner”. I’ve usually just let Plex index them however the default posters and backgrounds were selected. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to try and pretty up the presentation in library view on my TV. So I started opening the video files in VLC, exporting a snapshot of whatever poster frame I think looks the nicest and then dragging that into the poster tab in the web UI.

The other day, I decided to take a look at my handiwork on my TV instead of just trusting however it looked in my browser. I was surprised to find that all my effort seemed wasted because nothing was using my selected posters. After a bit of trial-and-error, I noticed that the Library view on my nVidia Shield TV was actually showing the background images instead of all the posters I painstakingly exported and updated.

Is this how it’s supposed to work? I’d hate to have to go back and do all the same updates to each item’s background image. I’d have to track down all the JPGs across 3 different devices as I’m just using whichever laptop or desktop computer I’m closest to at the moment (plus, I like having 2 different images for thumbnail and player card views since it gives me more than one reference point for the content itself).

I saw this reported for mobile devices within the past couple of years. Here: Bug: Plex personal media shows background instead of posters

And here: Plex mobile showing background art instead of poster

It was reported for Roku in 2022 without any followup: Playlist Thumbnail Shows Background Image Instead of Poster

There’s also a report from last year for Google TV: Google TV: showing 'background' instead of 'poster' as thumbnail on personal files

There’s no response to the Google TV or Roku threads above so I don’t know if this is (poorly) designed behavior or an actual bug.

Edit: I’m leaving the original post in place, but I believe this is a bug.

Steps to reproduce bug:

  1. Create a library with the “Other Videos” type using the “Plex Video Files” Scanner and “Plex Personal Media” Agent.
  2. Scan in any valid video file.
  3. Click into the “Edit” window for the new video file.
  4. Click into the “Poster” tab and add an image of a solid blue rectangle.
  5. Click into the “Background” tab and add an image of a solid red rectangle.
  6. Click “Save Changes”.
  7. On a Roku device, navigate to the new library and note that both the Recommended and Library views show the new video thumbnail with the blue poster image as one would expect. Select the new video and note that the player card view shows the red background image, also as one would expect.
  8. On an Android TV, Samsung Tizen, or LG WebOS device, navigate to the new library and note that in both the Recommended and Library views, the thumbnail is incorrectly showing the red background image instead of the blue poster image.

This is the edit screen for the poster image where I changed it to a plain blue rectangle for easier illustration:

This is the edit screen for the background image where I added a plain red rectangle, also for easier illustration:

This is what the Android TV “Recommended” library view shows, which is the red rectangle when I expect to see the blue poster image. Samsung Tizen and LG WebOS also, incorrectly, show the red background image. Roku shows the correct blue image in the library views.

I fired up my Roku and checked the same library. Posters show as posters, background images show as backgrounds. It looks like whatever was being reported on Roku from '22 was fixed. And since my Galaxy S24 Ultra shows the right image (albeit in the wrong orientation) this seems buggy to me on Android TV.

In the Samsung Tizen app, this appears as broken behavior in version 5.91.0. Posters bring in the background image in both Recommended and Library views.

As far as I can figure, this appears to be a bug. The behavior is broken in PMS 1.41.5.9522 with:
Android TV Player 10.26.0.2578
Samsung Tizen 5.91.0
LG WebOS Player 5.91.0

On the following platforms, it worked correctly as of the versions I tested below:
Android Mobile 10.26.0.2578
Roku Player 7.31.7.9854
Plex Desktop for MacOS 1.108.1.307

I’m going to have to go with what I know about Posters and BACKGROUNDS and how Plex uses them - I have two personal libraries of videos with over 30,000 videos between them, so I know a little bit about this.

When you assign it add a Poster to a video in Plex it is the picture that is displayed in your list of available videos and is the poster that your 'cursor ’ moves over as you screen through your Libraries.

The video’s Background is what shows up as a large ~16x10 aspect ratio in the top right quarter of your screen - this is what I believe you are describing (you didn’t include an screenshot or photo of your TV interface.

I how I understand you correctly. If not, please attach a photo and description of what you think the poster is and we’ll go from there. :victory_hand:

Ps. I use Plex on Roku, Windows and Android and the displaying of the poster and background is consistent between the interfaces (this includes the new Experience on Roku as well as Android phone).

Yup, I’ve been using Plex since 2011 so I’m also familiar with the difference between where the poster image and the background images are supposed to be shown. In the player card view, the background image is correctly displayed. In a library view (thumbnail index view), it pulls the background image and not the poster image, which is the one I would expect since this is the behavior with Movie and TV libraries. Not to mention that it allows you to set different poster and background images in the first place. In addition, the behavior is correct for personal media libraries when viewed on Roku, and on a browser, and on the Android mobile app. It is incorrect when viewed on an Android TV app, a Samsung Tizen app, and an LG WebOS app. So there is something buggy in the interaction with these platforms and PMS.

I’d post screenshots but the library contains content of an adult nature and I don’t believe it would meet the guidelines of the forum.

That’s why I haven’t posted screenshots either. :open_mouth:

That said, I honestly don’t understand what you mean by Thumbnail Index View.

I have also confirmed what you found on Roku and both the Plex and new Plex Experience app do show the posters and background art correctly.

I’d suggest changing the Title of your OP from a Question, Why? To a factual statement like:
Background art on XYZ Devices are showing as Posters.

Unlike you, I’ve spent countless hours for a decade specifying not only all cover posters but also background art for every feature in my personal Library.

Only having acces to Roku, web and Android Phone I never experienced what you’re describing.

I did have a Google TV for a brief minute, but didn’t notice this issue - back in January. (I couldn’t stand the UI and lack of the Plex for Roku features that don’t exist on either Google TV or Apple TV devices so I got a Roku Pro model instead.

I’ll ask my friends who have other devices and see if they are having this issue/UI bug add well.

If you don‘t try to change your approach here, you will never get any help. We need screenshots. I‘m not even sure I fully understand your issue!

I’m confused as to why the description is confusing. There are only two images in Plex. A library view should be showing poster images. The player card view for an individual video should be showing the background image. The bug in Android TV, Samsung Tizen, and LG WebOS is that library views for personal media shows background images instead of poster images.

Just saying. A screenshot depicting your issue would go a long way. Can’t expect Plex to fix something that you are not trying to further explain to them.
