[Bug?] Plexamp on iOS/MacOS using WAN IP on LAN connection

Server Version#: Synology 1.19.4.2935
Player Version#: iOS/MacOS 3.1

I have a weird issue that is responsible for the slow downloads in Plexamp when on my home WiFi where my Plex server resides. First, let me give you some background on my network since it’s a little complicated with double NAT:

ISP Public IP (104.x.x.x)-> ATT Fiber modem NAT (172.16.0.1) -> EdgeRouter12 NAT (10.13.2.0) -> LAN

Plex server LAN IP is on the (10.13.2.0) network.

The “Prism” Plex client on my iPhone always connects to my Plex server via the LAN IP address and downloads FLAC files at 30+MB/s when on my home WiFi, which is damn fast. No problems there.

However, PlexAmp on my iPhone/Mac/iPad connect to the “WAN” IP of [172.16.0.1] per Varys and downloading music is a pathetic 2 MB/s, when using my home WiFi.

Oddly, if I launch the full Plex client on iPhone/Mac/IPad it always connects to the LAN IP address like I would expect when on my home network. AND, if I pull the plug between the EdgeRouter and the ATT fiber modem, Plexamp will revert back to the LAN IP and downloads are extremely fast. If I plug the cable in, Plexamp falls back to using the [172.16.0.1] address on the next song.

What would make ONLY Plexamp connect to the ATT Fiber router’s private IP?

I do have remote access enabled for the Plex server, but that’s using the public IP address of 104.x.x.x and nowhere does it refer to the 172 address space. I don’t see how it even knows about the 172 address space that has only two networking devices on it.

I think it’s probably due to your LAN having DNS rebind protection enabled. The app is not currently able to work around that.

Ah ha! Never would have thought of that causing an issue. I disabled DNS rebind protection and viola! Plexamp now is using the LAN address for playback and downloading offline tracks is now ultra fast. Thanks!

Should help with some other client types as well.
