I have been having problems streaming music in the Plexamp app on my iPhone and Macbook. I am able to stream music in the Plex for Mac app on my laptop perfectly, I am also able to stream movies/TV on my iPhone without any problems. The Plexamp stream buffers consistently or else will play for a few seconds before buffering. I did a restart of my server the other day and that seemed to fix the issue for a short period of time. I uploaded the logs from Plexamp on my iPhone, I was unable to find the logs for Plexamp on my Macbook.
I recently upgraded to iOS 14, I do not know if this could be part of the issue although my Macbook software has not changed recently. I have not changed any settings related to my music setup in Plex since Plexamp was working well a few weeks ago so I am unsure what could be causing this issue.
Plexamp 3.1.1 on Macbook
Plexamp 3.2.0 on iPhone
Any help would be great! I really love Plexamp but it is virtually unusable at the moment because I can only play music that has been downloaded locally (which works fine).
Thanks for this tip, although I do not think any of those three apply. The secure connection setting for the server is set to preferred and remote access is enabled. I am currently on a different LAN than where the NAS is hosted and the wifi here was just installed last week with gigabit fiber from CenturyLink. The wifi/modem is a Greenwave C4000XG and I can’t imagine any sort of modern device wouldn’t have NAT Loopback capabilities. I was unable to find any setting for the router related to DNS Rebinding Protection.
I have been testing Plexamp over Verizon LTE as well with NordVPN turned off and 1.1.1.1 (DNS servers) turned off on my iPhone. The Plexamp stream still has a significant amount of buffering - even when trying to play 128kbps over a ~20+ Mbps connection although it does appear (with limited testing) to play more of a song over LTE as opposed to wifi even though the wifi is much faster. I am not too concerned if there is a problem with the wifi as I will not be staying at this LAN much longer but the fact that I am unable to stream over LTE is concerning.
I have been testing this with a variety of different songs/albums and the problem persists across all of them.
I’m not sure what to recommend, but it does seem like from what you’re experiencing the network performance between client and server is slow, I’m just not sure why that would be.
My only recommendation is to try to narrow things down by trying a variety of scenarios/configurations and see if you can narrow down the cause.
I’ve done some more troubleshooting and am still having issues getting any network connectivity through Plexamp. I have tried to stream music and refresh the downloads at a few different wifi locations and all of them fail. On cellular data I can stream although there is considerable buffering even with decent network speeds. I am beginning to think it might be a port or firewall issue on my NAS.
I currently have my home router setup to send a random port number to the plex port 32400 and then the plex port is open on the NAS firewall. If plexamp is trying to use a different port for remote access it would likely be blocked by either the router or the firewall or both. After disabling the firewall on my NAS and using the default settings I am able to stream over remote wifi again - although it is still far from perfect. I can’t tell if the downloads are working or not on my iPhone and the Plexamp app on my Mac still buffers endlessly connected to the same wifi as my phone.
With a 100+ mbps wifi connection there is occasional buffering (firewall disabled) and for some reason Plexamp shows the codec as Opus - even though the file is MP3 and the Plex dashboard shows the audio as being direct play. If someone knows what port to allow through my firewall to get it working that would be great. Or if you have any idea as to the other issues I am facing that would be great. I completely switched my entire music library over to Plex so facing this issues is very troublesome. Thanks for any help!
Update: As soon as I restarted the PMS, Plexamp began working on both my phone and laptop even with the firewall enabled on my NAS. I have no idea as to why restarting it seems to have fixed the issue, but last time this happened the problem cropped up again not long after the restart. If anyone has any insight that would be great. I’m going to add my Plex logs here if that helps. Plex Media Server Logs_2020-10-05_20-36-17.zip (4.3 MB)
I’m using plex with a reverse proxy to port 32400 on my synology nas. Connecting to plex from outside my network works fine, but plexamp won’t connect anymore.
If I turn off the firewall the connection works. Did plex do any changes on the plexamp ports? How can I get plexamp back to work without my firewall turned off?
upgrade to the latest just released server, and see if that helps. there was an issue related to SSL certs which might have caused the problem you’re running into.
