I posted awhile ago about crashing chapter thumbnails in plex when using the new player, that thread goes back a year with a few other people chiming in having the same issue. I can link to it, but its closed now. I am also using 4k resolution on a 4k tv.
However while its less frequent today, the only platform this crashing chapter thumbnails occurs on is the new player on plex shield. When i say crashing i mean they quickly disappear when you bring up the UI and navigate down to the chapter thumbnails (sometimes).
Using the old player chapter thumbnails work fine on the shield, apple tv works fine, iphone works fine. The minute i switch to the new player on the 2017 shield, chapter thumbnails will crash occasionally. I did notice they were less frequent when i had pms running on the pc with attached storage (so pms and storage on the same pc), but i dont know why or if that mattered. Today i currently am running plex server on the shield as well, with media stored on a windows network share.
While they are disappearing less frequently it still occurs.
Its almost as if the way the new player on the shield presents them, the animation of hitting down to select the chapter thumbnails will occasionally cause them to vanish. When you bring up the navigation menu (Play, Pause, ect) then navigate down to the chapter thumbnails, sometimes they will appear briefly then disappear when using the new player. Sometimes they work fine.
I really dont know what causes it. All i can tell is sometimes when hitting down to select a chapter thumbnail, the smooth transition of hitting down on the player to select them (chapter thumbnails) sometimes causes them to vanish in the new player.
I do notice plex apple players do not have this issue and present chapters differently.
I could upload a video of it happening if it helps. It would be great to see this finally resolved and get my chapter thumbnails back when using the shield.
In the video above if you click the link., you can see the chapters vanish, then restarting the movie they stick this time. I dont think you need a gmail email account to view it.
This is a video of this happening, this bug only occurs in the shield using the old player. The old player does not have this occur on the shield, it also does not occur on ios.
This issue also goes back a year and is still unresolved… No other player on any other platform i tested has this issue.

Not sure if this is another UI glitch, or something more. They happened less frequently as mentioned when pms ran on the pc where my storage is also located. But still occurred. Right now pms is on the shield, and my storage is still on a network/hardwired gigabit attached pc.
This needs more visibility. It is incredibly frustrating to arrow down and see chapters for a little bit but when you go back later they disappear. I think the main reason this isn’t getting visibility is because there are a lot of people who think things are working because they just see the chapter support one time and they don’t see where they disappear. it only seems to happen when I have gone to the chapters and then gone back again. It’s like it suddenly decides nope I don’t want to do that. I am running Plex server on shield TV with only 4K movies.

I am not sure what plex android dev’s look at when it comes to bug’s, this ones over a year old and i was asked for logs last year from a dev (I provided a number of logs), and then they said well i cant reproduce it and then they were never heard from again. We are still paying plex pass customers. Sometimes it feels like we are dev testers instead of beta testers. I dont know if plex dev’s are testing their own code, doing support, and development, but something needs to change. There should be a process rather then plex pass customers just banging their head hoping for some attention and hoping others will come here and confirm these issues.
Please can we finally get some attention on this one?
I am noticing this happening now on non 4K files on my main server. Direct play and transcoded. I am going to load the new beta release to my Shield and see if anything changes. It seems like I will notice it more or less between different builds but I could also have just been going to chapter section more or less so obviously that’s anecdotal.
Let me know if there is something I can provide to help with this.
EDIT: The movie was just watching that chapters disappeared on is now holding onto chapter when I arrow down to them. I stopped the movie, closed Plex and installed the newest android tv beta. Resumed the movie and I have chapters back. I will play around a little bit. Can’t be sure they will remain at this point.
Reporting that this bug still exists on newest nVidia Shield TV Pro. Pressing down (or pause) on random titles, I can see the ‘Chapter Selection’ section heading below. Pressing down once more to access and the Chapters will show for a brief moment, then disappear. showing only the Play Queue.
I can sometimes stop playback and then resume and the Chapters will reappear and remain.
I would like to add something I have discovered. I was having this issue on my ShieldTV with content playing from a physically connected to the ShieldTV USB hard drive.
I have now moved my 4K library onto my main Plex server(Windows machine) and stopped using the directly connected to the ShieldTV USB drive with the built in Plex Server on the shield. I seem to not see this issue happening anymore now that I am not streaming from a hard drive directly connected to the shield. I don’t know why that would matter because in both setups I am still direct playing the files.
Plex people do you have any ideas why this would make the difference here???
