Server Version#: 1.21.3.4014 (Mac)
Player Version#: Plex for Android 8.12.3
The show in question is ‘The Great’ on Channel 4 in the UK. I have only noticed this issue on this one show.
The files play back perfectly on iOS. It’s just Android Tv that is the issue.
I can share two files that played back perfectly when I recorded them in early January, but which now play in slow motion on the Shield TV pro. I did not want to use mkvtoolnix to create a sample as that would change the makeup of the original .ts file. Please message me and I can give you a private link to the files in question.
I have to now force a transcode for the files to play back at normal speed. Side note, the ads play at normal speed, but. the actual show plays in slow motion.

+1 on this, I’m UK too I’ve experienced it with both Shield TV and Android mobile for certain HDHomeRun tuner recorded programs. Most things are fine, but the BBCs David Attenboroughs The Perfect Planet is one that exhibits this issue.
I use the same work around as you do.
Edit: at this point I think it might be something to do with 1080 interlaced content (main program) and when the pre-content (adverts/ident) is progressive, or vice-versa, but I haven’t had the time to investigate further.

Perhaps @anon18523487 can confirm the bug. I can DM him the files.
How big is the file? If it’s >100MB, can you generate a sample file?
It’s a .ts file so I cannot do a sample. I can send you a google link to download.
Why not? Just use ffmpeg to grab the first 100MB.
I thought that the issue could have been caused by how plex constructed the file from the recording so re-packing it might change the makeup of the issue I have, or get rid of it. The ads of play fine, just the actual show.
But I can do. I’ll have to add the samples to the server to see if they display the same issue as the originals.
Do you know the ffmpeg command on Mac to split out a sample based on timestamps? I ahem brew so I think ffmpeg is installed anyhow.
Excellent thanks:
Sample 1: (issue starts at time: 00:03:30)
Sample 2: (issue starts at time: 00:05:34)
I grabbed that first sample. It’s only 3:27 long. How am I suppose to test at 3:30? I might need a longer sample.
it’s 3:51 mins long. Should be fine. Tested it before I sent it over. The second one is 6:59 mins long. No idea where you got the 3:27 from.
media info of file with duration.
thegreats1e1.txt (3.3 KB) thegreats1e2.txt (4.2 KB)
I even downloaded the file myself and it’s 3:51.
Huh. I was trying to play it on my computer to just check the file and that player showed the length as 3:27. This program starts having issues at around 28 seconds where the sweepstakes commercial starts.
Another program shows 3:51 but plays it fine. I’ll try on Android, but I’m guessing it’s something with the file and the player is getting confused how to handle it.
I think this is an issue I’ve seen before where the broadcast switches codec and/or framerates between the show and commercial, or between different commercials. Some players don’t deal with this change mid stream and you get something weird.

Works fine on iOS. Android plays the actual show in slow motion, but plays the ads correctly.
Vlc plays it fine. Forcing a transcode on android is a temp fix.
@anon18523487 from what I’ve seen today it seems to be an issue when the audio channels change.
Here I have 2 samples of a recording I made at Christmas time of Snail and the Whale on the BBC - the recording played just fine at the time with an older version of Plex for Android that would have been available then - but now, with newer Plex app versions things go into slow motion when the program itself starts (8.12+ I would guess…)
This is a sample taken from the start of the file, which covers the end of the previous broadcasted program (-3min pre-record).
And this is a sample taken from within the program itself.
When comparing the Codec page through VLC of these two files (pre on the left, program on the right), the difference is the change of the Audio channels from Stereo to Multi-channel (5.1)
Yes, a change in the audio can affect it too.

Assuming that this is the issue - it seems to be, for me at least - can this please be raised as a regression, as it didn’t used to cause issues on earlier Plex for Android versions, and sounds like it’s not an issue for other clients.

Yes, exactly. those files I attached all used to play perfectly. So I suspect a regression of some variety.
@anon18523487 were you able to recreate the issue that we’re seeing?
I realised I didn’t include a ‘full’ sample of the recording in which the audio channel change format. Do you need me to provide that or is what @Afullmark has given enough?
