[BUG] Renamed (and locked) movie names spontaneous reset (and unlock)

Server Version#: 4.63.0
Player Version#: N/A

I have two issues. It’s possible they are related, so I’ll describe them both here.

Issue 1

Scanning new for newly added movies (almost) never gives me proper names. I always get the torrent name.

  • When I add a new movie I rename the folder and files as per Plex naming rules (ie. Movie Name (1901)/Movie Name (1901).mp4 etc)
  • During the scanning process I see the entry get renamed three times:
    1. First, what I assume is the name I gave it (eg Movie Name), then
    2. Fetched online movie database name, then it reverts to
    3. Some other raw file name (eg. Movie.Name.1901.1080p.x265.mp4)

This has happened since I first installed Plex. I’ve fiddled with the settings in Settings > Agents > Movies several times, I can’t work out if there is a way to stop this happening. I find the “Agents” section very confusing.

Here is a screenshot wshowing the Agents settings that I am currently using.

Issue 2

Because of the above “bug”, I am forced to rename every movie I add to the server. I edit the Title and Sorted Title fields. That automatically sets the lock on those fields.

But recently (for some months) I have started noticing that some movie titles have reverted to their original bad names (ie Movie.Name.1901.1080p.x265.mp4). At first I thought it was just that I had accidentally missed renaming them.

But now I am sure that random movies are spontaneously getting their names reset. I know this for sure because:

  1. Movies that I (and others) have watched have had their names reset. I would have noticed, when I watched them, if the name was wrong.

  2. I have, in the past, gone through and checked that every movie has a proper name. So the reversions must have happened after that.

It seems to happen randomly, so I can’t provide a steps-to-reproduce. Every time I notice one, I will go through and check for others. There will always be a few others. For example, when it happened today, I went through and found roughly 15-20 out of 850 movies. Again it seems to be random which files are affected. It doesn’t seem to keep happening to the same entry, for example.

If there is anything I can do to help track this bug down, please let me know.

Edit your movie library
go to the tab “Advanced”
Clear the check mark out of “prefer local metadata”

If your movies are not stored in a hard drive inside your server machine, you want to also clear the check box “Empty trash automatically after every scan”
under Settings - Server - Library

Thanks very much Otto. That has fixed my first issue.

My Agent was set to “Plex Movie (Legacy)”. I had to change it to “Plex Movie” to see that setting. It’s not listed under the Legacy version.

Although I guess now that fixing that will mask the other bug. I probably won’t see it any more.

@Plex

I guess I now have the beginnings of a steps to reproduce:

  1. Set the Movie Agent to “Plex Movie (Legacy)”, or enable “Prefer local metadata”.

Before changing that setting, I had just added a few movies and had done a re-scan. After that scan I went through and discovered that two movies had had their names reset. As mentioned in my first comment, I thought I had corrected all the broken names earlier today. So it’s possible that some are getting reset on every scan. Although obviously I can’t be 100% sure I didn’t just miss those two entries the first time through.
