Bug report - Android update - Black screen on Dolby Vision & HDR10 content

Bug: When playing back files via direct play that contain both Dolby Vision and HDR10, the screen is completely black. Audio and subtitles work. When transcoding is used, video returns. Files that contain DV but not HDR10 work fine, it’s only the files that contain both DV + HDR10 that are problematic.

Plex version: 2025.14.0 (966828378)

Devices: Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra (Android 14, One UI 6.1.1), Motorola Edge 30 Ultra (Android 14)

Attempted Fixes: Restarting server, updating server, restarting mobile devices, reinstalling Plex apps, ethernet USB-C adapter. Files play back correctly on older Plex app.

Android 15.

I can confirm this is an issue with my Pixel 7.

I’m seeing similar on 2015.15.0. It affects files with Dolby Vision profile 07.06 and HDR10. Sound plays but there’s just a black screen with no video. The video does appear when transcoding.

Files with Dolby Vision profile 08.06 and HDR10 appear to correctly fallback to HDR10. Files with profile 05.06 (no HDR10) show video but the colours are off, which is to be expected on my S23.

Same issue as others are reporting:

I’m trying to play a 4K video (DoVi/HDR10 with TrueHD 7.1 audio). This worked fine on the previous version of the Plex mobile app, but after updating to the latest release (v2025.15.0), I now get a black screen with audio playing in the background.

Device info:

Android Device: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
Plex App Version: 2025.15.0

Additional notes:

  • If I force transcoding by capping the bitrate to 20 Mbps, the video becomes visible.
  • The same file plays perfectly on my 5th gen iPad with the latest Plex version, so the issue seems isolated to the Android client.

Got the same issue on my Pixel 8 Pro.

@BigWheel (apologies, yours was the first name that came to mind) is this something that Plex is aware of? If so, is it actively being looked at or on a list to be looked at?

This has been fixed in 2025.16.0, and should be available next week. You can sideload the build below if you want it fixed now.
