So the latest update to the Android TV app has broken Dolby Vision for me. Has worked perfectly for quite awhile, so I hope we can get this fixed up!
via the release notes for this new Android TV app:
Player: when transcoding a DoVi stream we shouldn’t attempt to play it as DoVi.
My system needs to transcode the EAC3 audio to AC3 on my DV files and now since it has to do that to play proper 5.1, it breaks the Dolby Vision part of things.
Can we get some kind of On/Off toggle for this new player setting?
So I was finally able to figure out how to install the previous versions apk on my android tv and I can confirm DV is now working correctly. Audio is being transcoded from EAC3 5.1 to AC3 5.1 and the video is a great direct stream of the 4k dv video.
This is an unintended consequence of fixing another issue. There were cases where attempting to play a transcoded DoVi file would result in the device still trying to use the DoVi decoder, instead of the h264 decoder, because ffmpeg doesn’t strip out the DoVi stuff when transcoding. So now we’ll look at how we can preserve Direct Streams with DoVi, when just the audio is transcoded. If it’s a DoVi profile with an HDR10 fallback (such as profile 7) then it should fallback to HDR10. This should only present if you have something like profile 5 with no fallback. We’d prefer to fix the core of the issue, rather than adding some off/on setting, which would cause different issues under difference circumstances
That version is an out-of-date beta, that doesn’t contain the fix. You’ll need to update to the latest release to get this fix, version 9.13.1.37378 or newer. You’re on 9.13.1.37355
Hello Josh!
Glad you could find a way to get the DV playback back by rolling back to a working version of the AndroidTV app!
By any chance, could you direct me on how to achieve this? I would also like to roll back to the previous version that worked for me (1-2 weeks ago?) and enjoy Dolby Vision while the Plex team is looking upon this issue.
Oh! Sweet then!
I thought it would take weeks before getting this fixed. This is awesome and quick!
I tried to install the beta APK v. 9.13.1.37378 but the app couldn’t install (sideload…)
I don’t see this official latest version on my TV’s Google Play store, but I guess it’ll be available soon enough, in 1-2 days, like you said because of the staged rollout.
I am in Canada. Do you know if this version will be available, and any idea “when” ?
Last version fixed the Dolby Vision issue. I’ve noticed however another related issue: all the preview thumbnails of Dolby Vision contents have the same wrong pink and green tint. Of course I think that this time is a server-side bug. Is this a known problem?
