Bug report: Devices can't access libraries on Plex server Win10 after wake on LAN

Hi,

I think I’ve found a bug with Plex Media server on a Win10 PC set to wake on LAN. I’ve posted about it in the support forum without any joy so I thought I’d officially report it as a bug.

Issue: Devices can’t access libraries on Plex server Win10 after wake on LAN.

Devices:

Media server: Win10 PC.

Players: Android, Chrome mac and windows web, Roku® Streaming Stick™️+, Roku Express.

Description: I have a Win10 PC running plex media server which is set to sleep after 5 mins. This PC has wake on lan enabled so my other plex devices can wake it from sleep to access the media server. In the last year, when I attempt to access libraries on the media server from any of my players listed above, they have no access.

Fix: If I close plex media server, restart it, then access the libraries using plex web on chrome locally on that machine, the other players can then access the libraries until the PC next goes to sleep.

Hi, can I get a reply here please?

Plex does not support WOL and never has as far as I know. Opening a client on another device doesn’t send out a WOL packet to your sleeping computer

I have always used WOL on my server computer but I have to trigger that myself independently of Plex before my server becomes available to any outside clients

I remember seeing a feature request for this and if I recall correctly the indication is that it was never going to happen

Hi, thanks for the reply. I used Plex WOL successfully for about a year, but only in the last 6 months or so I’ve encountered this issue.

Hi everyone, does anyone from Plex look at this forum? If so, could I get a reply from Plex please? If not, how do I contact them? This issue is really impacting on my use of Plex, and I’ve been a very happy Plex Pass user since 2015.

This has come up a few times. Check if your computer’s IP is changing while it is asleep. If so, there isn’t much that can be done since PMS would not see this change until the next check which could be hours later. Setting a static IP should help. There is a network bug we identified recently that will be addressed in 1.30.2. That may also help.

Thank you for the reply, the computer’s IP definitely doesn’t change after waking so I’ll keep an eye out for 1.30.2. Cheers.

The issue can also be caused if your ethernet adapter also powers down. It can take a few moments to power back up when waking, but PMS may be too fast so when it checks for the network connection it is down. You can try turning off all power saving features on your ethernet card.

Understood, but if I turn off power saving on the ethernet adapter, the PC won’t go to sleep anymore will it? See attached.

It should still allow the computer to sleep.

So I tested this and the machine still goes to sleep but can’t be wakened by WOL. On the plus side, every time I manually wake it using the keyboard I can access my plex libraries

Did you turn off both settings? You only need to turn off the first one.

If I uncheck the first option “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”, the second option is automatically unchecked and greyed out.

Hmm, not sure then. 1.30.2 is scheduled to some out to beta on Monday so you can see if the change helps.

OK thank you
