Bug report: not logging views from Chromecast

Plex server does not record any activity when someone uses an android to cast from the Plex Mobile app to a Chromecast or Google TV.
This means that the server does not show any active stream even though the user is streaming.

This also means tautulli will have no saved watch states for these types of streams.

Please fix.

Can you describe your specific set up and network? app and device versions etc. Does it matter if casting when on local network with server or remote? only with certain accounts?

I can’t reproduce any issue with this. Casting to a Chromecast Ultra, A Chromecast/Google TV or the Google TV Streamer all report playback status to server and appear in Now Playing . During playback I then used my phone to drag slider to it being half way through then stopped it, then after a few moments on my phone the item appeared in Continue Watching updated with the watch state correctly being half way through.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Plex app on phone, and select content. (issue happens on both Movies and Television shows)
  2. Press the Cast Icon in the plex app and select the Chromecast
  3. After they are connect, start playing the video

The video will play on the Chromecast but there is no record of the stream on the plex server, plex dash or Tautulli.

Networking:
The plex Server is at a different location than the client and phone, but both networks are connected over a wireguard VPN tunnel.
The Client and phone are in a subnet that plex server has set as “local” Local streaming works and reports just fine from this location for every scenario other than Casting.

Accounts:
I’m using the same plex account on all devices.

This issue also occurs on a TCL TV with Google TV built in so it isn’t exclusive to the Chromecast.

Is this any movie and/or show? Can you cast from a Chrome browser?

Why is a VPN tunnel necessary here? Is there an issue with remote access?

Can you reproduce, capture logs from each device (client, phone, and server) and share your logs?

Do add to the Data, I had someone with a different plex account, but the same library. Cast from a Pixel 7 to a TV with google Chromecast on the same subnet as the server.

They started playing the content on their phone first, which showed in the activity feed.
Then they started a cast to the TV. It showed as playing on the Chromecast for about 5 seconds in the activity feed before disappearing entirely, even though it was still actively streaming.

Everything seems to work fine when casting from a desktop chrome browser session to the chromcast.

Now after Disconnecting and reconnecting to wifi on my phone and trying to do a whole bunch of tests, it seems to be working… I have no idea what changed.
