Totally agree, but that wasn’t really my question… In your estimation (and I am inclined to agree with you based on what I’ve tested tonight), the “On Deck” order follows the “Originally Aired” or rather the “Originally Available” dates that are set in Plex either Manually by the User, or Automatically by TheTVDB. I also have the DVD Order set in Plex for FireFly. However, the “Originally Available” field is the same no matter if the “DVD” Order is selected, or the Airdate Order is selected in TheTVDB (It doesn’t change in Plex either I just tried it). The dates are the same no matter what. So when you play firefly through plex, how does the “On Deck” handle that airdate order? does it go counter to the dates? And if so, I wonder what criteria it’s actually following then…
Not sure I know what you’re asking…
DVD order just doesn’t happen by magic. DVD order means you name your episodes as per the DVD order - which is different than the Aired Order. TVDB simply assigns the correct content to the ‘screwy’ DVD order you have selected - and they list. If they have no DVD order listed - you’ll never get a DVD order.
If you use the standard naming then select DVD order - it’s still all messed up. If you wanna play the DVD Order Game - you have to follow the rules - and there is no easy button. You’re gonna have to get your hands dirty.
It’s confusing - to say the least.
I think you’re making it more confusing than is necessary honestly.
- Name files correctly (they’re already ordered correctly provided you ripped them from the DVDs, just name accordingly)
- Within Plex click Edit Pencil on Series and to go Advanced
- Select DVD Order instead of aired order
- Refresh Metadata
But none of that has to do with what I asked. The whole way this thread started, was from the other thread where you pointed out that the “On Deck” follows the “Originally Available” date within the Plex Episode Metadata. If that’s true (which I believe you when you say it is) I am wondering how it knows the order in which to play them for the DVD Date vs Air Date argument this series inherently creates. That “Originally Available” date does not change between the Airdate Order, or DVD Order, so visually the episode “Serenity” which is Episode 1 in the DVD order, and Episode 11 when “Air Date Order” is chosen, has an “Originally Available” date of 2002-12-20, no matter which of the two orders you choose.
So my question is, when you play Firefly, does it follow the Episode Numbering of the DVD Order that you have chosen, or does it follow the “Originally Available” date for the “On Deck” play queue.
DVD order, the way it once worked, was to follow the DVD ordering, not the air date… at least that’s what I thought it was doing. I might not have known, or cared what it was doing, only that it did it…lol
I had to actually change the order with naming, then TVDB/Plex gathered the proper metadata and plays in the DVD order:
I have FF On Deck and am up to War Stories. It appears to be working, but I haven’t watched an episode for a while - I’ll test a bit later.
For Plex it’s just playing in the order I have, but without the DVD order selected TVDB associates the wrong metadata with the episodes I have in DVD order. DVD Order sorts that out. I thought.
Correct, that’s exactly what it does…
No, not really, on thetvdb, there are 2-3 lists for episode order numbering. The Airdate Order is almost always used on that site as the primary list. So, for episodes where it’s necessary, a “DVD” Order also exists on a separate list. All of the order is derived from the S01E01 information., and not the date of air.
Plex also derives the proper play order from this (even without metadata you can still play stuff in order if it’s labeled correctly).
However, this whole thing had me curious, because with Firefly this weird situation exists (there are a few other shows where this happens too).
So now I am even more confused than when I started, but that’s ok… hopefully they can make autoplay follow the “On Deck” ordering (As I would imagine is the intended way), and we’ll all be happy campers…
