When we go to a TV show, we can start playback directly from its main screen without going to the specials section or seasons section.
Currently Plex starts playback from the first episode it finds, so if there is an specials section, it starts with the first episode, otherwise it starts with the first episode from the first season.
The problem is, specials are not always the first thing that was originally aired, so a sequence of the story is lost.
The idea by pressing “play”, is to playback the episodes and specials in the order they were originally aired, that way a sequence of the story is maintained.
I count on your upvote for Plex developers to take this suggestion into account.
I believe there may be a way to force this to happen. It might involve manually adding an air date to the Special in question. I’ve seen it mentioned before, getting specials to show up in queue with broadcast episodes correctly, but I don’t know the specific procedures. It would be incredibly useful for Doctor Who in particular.

If you play from On Deck and the air dates have successfully been administered - from TVDB, for instance - the items play in order with Specials injected where needed.
At least it used to work that way. If Plex has ‘improved’ on that time honored tradition I am not aware of it.
Hmmmm… providing you play from On Deck without any autoplay engaged… apparently. Which suits me (autoplay being the most annoying thing since a bullet-hole to the head was invented).

I’m not to keen on autoplay myself. Auto-select would be fine by me.
There are thousands of users that would prefer to not see the ‘post play’ debacle at all (if turned off), but Plex is so proud of that development vomit stream you’re gonna see it, and click around it every dam time, come HELL or high water.
‘On Deck’ is ‘Auto Select’. Always has been. We don’t really need to be bashed over the head with unwanted redundancies.
