[BUG] Timeline date grouping incorrect

@mm98 can you share what seemed to have solved your issue? I’m experiencing similar problems where photos uploaded with correct metadata is showing up incorrectly in the timeline view. See attached.

Note the Dec 24th photos are accurately grouped, but showing up “later” than where it should be in the timeline view, earlier than August 29th

It seams like the bug has returned again :man_facepalming: I started having images shifting to the next day, with the timestamp after 18:02:18 (6pm) …photos before that timestamp, is in the correct day slot.

Photo date-taken: 2019-12-28 18:02:18 (is placed in the Dec 28, 2019 slot)
Photo date-taken: 2019-12-28 18:05:23 (is placed in the Dec 29, 2019 slot)

@kevinchou have you renamed any of these photos from *.PLIST to *.JPG? PLIST is the format used on iOS 13. I’ve noticed, that the XML has a reference to the PLIST file, when it is renamed to JPG.

If you could DM me some samples I could see if there is something weird going on here.

Also remember that the timeline isn’t a fixed daily grouping, the groups are clusters of images which are in close proximity to each other. So it is possible to have photos from different days mixed with each other if they were taken in close succession (e.g. you took a photo at 11pm on the 1st and another at 12.30pm on the 2nd, those images would be clustered together).

It is kinda strange. For me the shifting of dates started on the 24th Dec like @kevinchou … everything before the 24th is correct. I have photos from the 19th showing on the 24th.

Even I am having same issue…I have 3 severs hosting same content…but date is not showing properly

Any chance you’ve looked at the DM yet? Thx.

@drzoidberg33 - just a quick ping to see if you’ve had a chance to review my DM. I’m still seeing the same problem even after recently updating to the most up-to-date version of PMS.

I found a photo from 2020 that’s showing up in 2001 in the timeline. here’s a screenshot of the image and the XML which clearly indicates that the image was taken in 2020. Any ideas? (rename xml to .xml instead of .txt)

also note that for some reason Jan 11, 2020 has a ton of photos that are not rendering, and shows up at the very bottom of the timeline view.

172896.xml.txt (6.6 KB)

did you get a chance to look at the DM? still waiting to hear back, thx.

would suggest getting logs after you view the timeline as above so I can see what requests are being made and then we could do that in a browser and see what xml is being returned. May also need to get a copy of your Plex Media Server database.

I deleted and rebuilt my photo library of 50k+ photos. The issue appeared to have resolved itself, maybe related to newer PMS release.

Are you aware of any documentation that shows the logic used for determining dates in timeline view (which Exif values are used first and alternative metadata used if preferred values are not set) ? I’d like to do a little bit more testing to see if the timeline view is behaving as expected.

Thanks!!

No info documented - but see this earlier post [BUG] Timeline date grouping incorrect - #24 by drzoidberg33
