Plex for iOS uploaded some photos and the timeline made some kind of shuffle. Many images from last year is placed in the 6’th May 2017 section. It is kinda random where images are placed, when you add new images. Anyone else seeing this?
Plex for iOS upload folder name: ( iphone )
My images are placed in subfolders ex: YYYY-MM-DD - {description}
I tried “Plex Dance”, “Refresh all metadata”, “Analyse” and “Scan Library files”. Nothing helps …
@drzoidberg33 has previously replied in another thread - regarding the exact same problem (regression bug maybe?) …
We’ll try as hard as possible to extract the taken date from EXIF tags. Different vendors may store these using different tags but we look in the following tags in this order:
If we fail to find any EXIF date information then we’ll fall back to using the earliest date in the file info, this is either created time or last modified time.

The thing I can’t figure out is that the timeline times seem to come from nowhere. They don’t match any of the date tags listed in the quote above.
It’s a WebApp bug. The timeline is correct on iOS.
I’m unsure how/why this is occurring. I know it’s quite an ask, but any chance you could share the photos library (or another library with a subset of images that shows the problem) with me? I’m Dom C.

Kinda hard to share the entire library … i have lots of photos and videos
One strange thing. If i create a new photo library, the timeline is correct - BUT when the iOS app syncs new images (when it is working - kinda random). The images in the timeline gets shuffled.
EDIT:If i look at the web response, which is used to generate the timeline - the dates are correct. It seams to be the code generating the output. Is not correct …
I’ll send you a link to a subset of the photos (PM).
I have attached the PMS XML response for the timeline view (5 sections loaded). Exclude the videos. They have been converted, and have no valid “dateTaken”.
I’m currently packing lots of photos for you …
One example
Synced from iOS 2017-05-15 12.55.36.JPG in ( iphone ) folder
Incidentally, I also created a new “test” library with some photos that were showing up incorrectly in timeline view. They now display correctly in the test library. I copied the photos to a new folder, FYI. They still do not appear correctly in the original library.
Also, I accidentally moved some pictures from their original location to the test library folder, instead of copying them. I copied the pictures back from the test location to the original folder. Some of these pictures now show up in the timeline view for today’s date.
Also, this happens for me on WebApp as well as the Android Plex client.
@“Dom C” I have created a script, which clones my entire photos library (JPEG’s only) including sub-folders. It creates new dummy images, which have the original filename, width, height and almost all metadata (excluding: GPS and thumbnail header) from the original. Each image is white, with the date taken text included in the center of the image. This will make it more easy to see differences regarding the timeline bug.
I have copied these to a new folder on my NAS and created a new Photo library in Plex. Now I just need to figure out, when/how the random shuffle happens. Tried to sync a image from iOS to the new library and of cause - this didn’t make the shuffle happen.
Noticed something strange with the timeline view. If I add an image (created in win10 paint) named test.jpg in a sub-folder called 2017-07-01 - Test and let PMS scan and include it. The thumbnail is placed correctly at the top. If I move this image named test.jpg to another folder called 2016-09-01 - Test … The image isn’t visible in timeline view anymore - but is visible in Photos view mode.
Could this possible a file naming conflict/bug? … My iOS syncs to a specific sub-folder of the root (where the library is pointing to). I move these images to the correct sub-folders named ex. YYYY-MM-DD - Some text …
UPDATE: This actually made my PMS crash (Report ID: 2455b8f1-0ad8-0d1b-64037fa6-1e5e20c3)

That is brilliant! Thanks so much, I’ll take a look at this soon.
I have found one strange issue. If you look at my previous post. There is no way to make PMS/PlexWeb update the Timeline view, if you move an image to another folder. This is only fixed by the nightly Scheduled Task. Analyse, Metadata update, PlexDance … doesn’t fix this in Timeline view - but only in Photo view mode.
Timeline view detects change on dateTaken, but doesn’t place it in the correct date section/group. Looks like the Timeline view is pre-rendered/cached and only updated by new photo added or the Scheduled Task.
I’m having the exact same problem as mm98. I actually just made a post under the main post for this feature. New and old photos all seem to have this problem and this is across 3 different cameras. File info shows correct date taken, date taken shows correctly within plex as well when i go to look at the file but timeline pulls a completely different date and sometimes year. Also - none of my folders have dates in the name.
It actually even looks like it wants to sort it correctly but doesn’t. There’s these blank spots that have the date of when these photos were taken but they’re blank.
If you can, sending me your database file would help tremendously to see where the issue is (or isn’t) happening. If you don’t mind doing that just PM me.
You can grab the database file from Plex Web in Settings -> Server -> Help -> Download Database.

I have removed the existing Photos library in the mean time. Which seams to be behaving as it should. Haven’t sync any photos yet tho. BUT, i have a db backup from 31-05-2017. I’ll PM you with a DropBox link.
I know this is an older thread, but I’m experiencing this same issue. I’m running Version 1.14.1.5488 which I believe is most up-to-date on a FreeNAS system. I synced my iPhone pictures to the library and it seems like all the photos got bumped out of place. The Captured Time viewed with the pencil button doesn’t match the date it’s displayed in the Timeline View.
I figured I could fix this by deleting my library and reimporting, but that doesn’t scale for every time I upload photos especially when auto uploading. Was a solution ever found to explain this?
