[Solved] Photo Timeline Out of Order and Photos in Wrong Date

Server Version#: 1.16.4.1469
Player Version#: 3.108.2

I have a photo library with folders per topic / event the largest folder has 287 files (mostly photos with a few videos). All files have accurate timestamps, mostly in EXIF Date Taken, some in MP4 EXIF “Media Created” and some set by file Created / Modified timestamps; Plex correctly identifies all timestamps in the “Captured Time” metadata field.

When viewing the library in timeline mode a fair number (wet finger in the air half) of the items appear in reverse chronological order, under the correct date heading, as expected, however, there is a section between “Feb 23, 2009” and “Jul 11, 2006” titled “Jan 17, 2019”; this heading is both out of order and contains a large number of items, much more than the 6 that actually belong on that date, from a wide range of dates, all of the items that shouldn’t be there have accurate “Captured Time” metadata detected by Plex for different days, months and even years. I can find no reference to the incorrect date “Jan 17, 2019” in any Plex or file metadata for the files.

I have tried scanning library files, refreshing metadata, analysing the library and even recreating the library but keep hitting the same issue.

Any suggestions on getting the timeline to (1) have headings in order throughout, and, (2) correctly categorise items based on the “Captured Time” would be much appreciated.

I had a similar issue. I was able to correct most (based on meta data) by Analyzing the library and then Refreshing Meta Data options from the dot-menu of the library.

Complete clean install was needed to get mine sorted, but now seems fine, It seems something ets left behind even when you delete a library, empty trash and recreate.

I have the same issue with Server version: 1.18.0.1913

My timeline has a load of photos incorrectly arranged under the date Apr 19, 2007 in a section in between photos from 2001 and 2003

The photos have date and time stamps from when they were taken and are reported correctly when you check the captured time attribute - there is no mention of the date Apr 19 2007 in any of the metadata as far as I can see.

I do not want to have to carry out a fresh install so I’m trying @Johnboyzear’s suggestion first.

Is anyone from @Plex able to comment on this please?

Was the complete reinstall marked as the solution?

Is there any fix for this issue… I am also facing same issue even after updating to latest plex version.

Hi
I have 1.18.2.2058 (web client)
Still not grouping photos correctly. E.g. photos from August 28 are in the group on August 30.

Same issue here. Checked the metadata of the picture file and everything is correct. I have tons of pictures from my vacation in July that are showing up as being in both March and April

Having same issue as well. I had to fix the created dates (by updating them to the modified dates) on my photos using a bulk utility as I had copied them over to a new drive which messed up all the created dates. That worked fine. I refreshed the meta data on the photos and it updated fine in the library but the timeline didn’t updated. How do we refresh the metadata for the timeline or get it to update itself?

Server rebuild was the only solution that worked for me.

I even tried deleting library, cleaning bundles and emptying trash before recreating library with no success.

Thanks joepitt91. I was hoping for not such a drastic solution. My Plex Server is on the Nvidia Shield and I have terabytes of data which takes forever if I have to refresh the metadata for everything.

I was hoping the developers have a solution as it doesn’t make sense that the library updates for the photos but the timeline does not. Seems like a bug they should work on.

Definably a bug; butt seems fairly rare so unlikely to get much attention

I’ve created a new bug report for this:

as this topic is marked solved when it actually is not really.

There is a bug. It is not picking up created date but incorrectly using modified date. How crazy. If Lightroom can work out surely Plex can.

Same problem here. It’s even worse. On the recommended tab I get “photos from 2010”. But there are photos from 2016 displayed and they have all the needed metadata.

I agree. A server rebuild isn’t a very good solution. Is there a way to report bugs to the Plex team?

Did not fix for me.

Should not be an issue . just design software correctly

I agree . Fix it . Timeline is crap and inaccurate. take time to choose correct fields .

its a bug and no excuse
