[BUG] Unable to transcode TRUEHD 7.1 on Android if Video transcode is disabled

Server Version#: 1.19.5.3112
Player Version#: 8.5.1.19778

Hello guys, since some time I’m unable to play movies with TrueHD 7.1 audio, because Plex always try to transcode the complete file (Video + Audio). My Plex Server is running on a WD EX4100 NAS and Players are Fire TV 4K, MiBox S, Galaxy S8, Win 10 APP, Xbox One X.

The problem only occurs on android based systems, that don’t support TrueHD natively.
Video transcoding is disabled in settings, because i stream only on my Network.

On Xbox and PC App Audio only transcoding works fine, on Android only an error like “Connection to server lost, please try again”

And no, i don’t use subtitles.Plex Media Server Logs_2020-08-25_19-28-01.zip (4.1 MB)

Can you provide me the XML for the video that failed. I’m seeing in your PMS logs that there is something with the video encoding that the Fire TV didn’t like so it is requesting a transcode.

Sure, but it doesn’t matter if it’s h265 or h264. Every movie with TrueHD (or other not supported audio tracks) fails, but only on Android

I can’t open that. Can you make it a zip or just upload as txt?

Sorry. 9301.zip (11.5 KB)

Your file is HDR10+. That is not supported on Fire TV devices and will cause a transcode.

Maybe, but it worked before, it can’t be the problem, even normal HDR fails.8565.zip (10.9 KB)

Let me take back my earlier statement. The Fire TV 4K can support HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, but the TV it is connected to must also support it. The Fire TV 4K is not able to change the color itself so if the TV it’s connected to doesn’t support these, then a transcode will be requested. The Android app will check with the connected device for compatibility.

If these worked before, was it with the same TV? Id’ like the Fire TV logs to double check, but it sounds like the app is not getting the support information from the TV.

I can play this (or all) movie(s) with every other audio track, but not with TrueHD. So DTS-HD works, (e)AC3 works, DTS works etc.

Setup is still the same.

Is it possible, to just disable this compatibility check? Somehow it’s only requested if the audio is TrueHD (or just not supported). I can confirm this now. I set my TV to extended HDMI format, and the problem is solved. But, if i want to watch at my BenQ TH681, this is not possible. But it also worked before, i was able to play any movie, regardless if it was 2160p with HDR or whateven, even is he can handle only 1080p.

No, if these files work while choosing another audio track, then there is something else going on and it’s not the HRD10. I’ll need the logs from the Fire TV to check. Please play the file with the TrueHD track, let it fail. Then stop and change the audio track to another and play again. Get me this log and the PMS logs at the same time.

Hope it’s right. Plex Media Server Logs_2020-08-26_01-25-55.zip (4.4 MB) FireTV LOG.txt (189.9 KB)

Ok, so it appears that it is the HDR10 causing the problem. I’ll need to verify this with the devs. From what I see, HDR10 is supported when the file is being direct played, but not when direct streamed.

I’m not aware of changes in this area so I don’t know why it would have worked for you in the past, but not now. I see that passthrough is disabled. Is it possible you had it enabled before and your TV/receiver was handling the conversion of the audio?

Audio passthrough was always disabled. I turned it on now to test, but then the same error occurs.

But thanks for your help.
