Finally Plex on the PS4!!!

 

Here are a few first impressions/questions/etc.

 

1.  set to 20Mbps and noticed some mild jerkiness when playing transcoded videos (3D H-OU, DTS, 16Mbps bitrate).

2.  3D transcoded subtitles are rendering weird.  Seeing ghosting.  This problem doesn't occur with PlexConnect on AppleTV3

3.  Is 24p supported?  I know the PS4 outputs at 60z; not sure if this can be changed/is allowed with the PS4 SDK

4.  Would love to be able to share libraries with other friends directly through the PSN friends list.

5.  Lastly; this isn't PS4 related but it would be cool if there was some sort of Smartthings integration with Plex.

Feature Requests????   Sure, here you go.....

1) Add the search feature as per browser interface (love to search for a title or for a topic such as "Christmas" and then start playing movies

2) Display movies by location/folder?

Hmm

i second the folder view as it makes it easier to locate files when you have over 300 of them and you have them stored in folders.

I'd like the facility to play playlists

It would be nice to be able to press play and have the app play all from that episode through the folder. Other than that I’m pretty impressed although I’m not convinced the quality is the same as my WDTV yet.

Ok - going to put this up there, and I know it will make the developers cry.....

Please, please, please give the option to scale/stretch the video file up to fill the screen (as per the old PS3 DLNA output).   I have had enough of my movies being displayed with vertical borders to the left and right of the movie.

No, possible never will be. WD TV will direct play basically everything without getting involved in any way shape or form. Coming through Plex will mean at the least it's being remuxed if not MP4 or worse, transcoded. I did several comparisons last night and it's decent, but nowhere near as good as my WD TV.

Hello.  Thanks for making the Plex client available on PS3.  On playing back some 720p content, I get sound but no picture.  I can play the same content directly on my ps3 without problems. The server doesn't appear to be transcoding.  Any ideas what might be causing this, please?

Audio lip sync would be another handy feature I’d like to see added.

When music playback is added, it'd be a really big deal if it's possible to use Plex as a background audio source for custom soundtracks.  Right now, the options are subscribe to Sony's music service or use a USB drive.  :(

Plex on PS3 is good, like others have mentioned folder view would make it awesome

Is there anyway to turn the dual shock 4 off? If I start playback and then press the PS button to turn off the controller the video goes back to the title screen.

There doesn't seem to be. I'm lucky that I have a Bravia TV. The remote works quite well with Plex on PS4. If I'm not using the remote I'm stuck with a controller that drains in a few hours of literally doing nothing. A slight annoyance but still enough to complain about.

In the Ps4 settings, you can set the duelshock auto timeout.  I have mine set to 5 minutes.   Start the movie, put the controller down, and 5 miniutes later it switches the controller (not the display or playback) off.  You then just press the PS button to reactivate it if you need to pause/stop the movie.

Another possible bug. When PSN is down (which seems to be often lately) we can't use Plex.

And again PSN is down so no Plex. Surely we don’t need to be signed in just to use Plex?

That´s a issue with Sony ... The Youtube App or Watchever or literally anything on the PS3 needs a PSN Connect. Totally Stupid ...

I found a small Bugs with Plex on PS3.

Sometimes when i start the Orange Selection Border which should be around one selected Category is off to the Left.

After switching through several Episodes of a Series whitin the "All Series" Category, when you hit the Back button it doesnt take you back to the All Series List,

it puts you back to Series Category.

Sometimes when you start Playback and immediatly stop it (due to mis-selection) then it can happen that you end in a loop of start and stop playback.

Of course the Trailer function would be nice, Playlists also and theme Music within the Series.

Apart from this i totally love it.

Bugs so far - There is sound but no picture on certain mkv videos. Why not just cut both since we can't watch a blank screen and only listen to audio. Unless you are a blind person. The strange thing is, another video in the same series with the same bitrate works fine.

The controls pulls to the left and you have to either wait it out or quit the app and start over. It happens every time I use Plex.
