I would like to see a Built in Rollback Update option in the PLEX Media Server. It would be nice to be able to go back to previous version easily when a new build doesn’t run like it should. Thanks
I guess it’s not really ‘Built In’, but you have a whole bevy of previous versions in your local app data’s ‘Updates’ folder.
Pick one - unless you’ve been deleting them and in that case - stop doing that.
Of course your ‘Path’ will be the default location, unless you’ve changed it - like I have, but right there they are…:
What is the default location? Thanks
The default location you ask…
EDIT: C:\Users<your_windows_user_account_name>\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Updates
Thanks Otto!

Windows x86 = C:\Program Files\Plex Media Server\Updates
Windows x64 = C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex Media Server\Updates
No, I don’t think that is true.
More like
C:\Users\<your_windows_user_account_name>\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Updates
For me the previous versions are located where OttoKerner explains which is nice however when I try to initiate the install for 1.7.5 it errors out and says that another version is already installed…so not exactly a rollback update option if you ask me…IMO that feature would be nice but could also be understandably a real PITA to implement code wise for every update that gets pushed out as well as probably make the dev time longer for each update if it was a requirement but hopefully I’m wrong because it would be a nice option right about now…
Rolling back on Windows is quite easy:
Quit Plex via its tray bar icon.
Stop the ‘Plex updater service’ from the Windows services control panel
uninstall Plex server via the regular Windows ‘Apps’ control panel (do not use ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc)
reboot Windows
install the old version of Plex server
OttoKerner I appreciate the step by step seems easy enough I probably would have missed shutting down the service so thank you.
Maybe you can help me with my main concern with uninstalling Plex that has been holding me back…
Does it get rid of the channels I set up, defined movie collections, and/or meta data for the movies i have?
Also will I have to re setup all my directory paths for movies, photos, mobile photo camera uploads, tv shows, setting preferences, etc.?
If you follow my steps above, everything will be retained.
Your libraries, channels and settings will all remain as they were.
If you however really want to erase everything, you better follow this guide:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201941078-Uninstall-Plex-Media-Server
Nope that’s all I needed to know I really didn’t want to lose all that stuff so I will go with your first response. Thank you for your help and clearing that up!

It work for me
Try this link https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/plex/9wzdncrfj3q8#activetab=pivot:overviewtab.
It took me to the Microsoft Store and I was able to download/install Plex Web Server 3.57.1 and Media Server Version 1.13.5.5332 over the latest V4 without having to remove the new version.
So now I’ve got all my old libraries back without any work and can navigate my media to my heart’s content ! Just make sure to set Server Updates to “Ask Me” and not “Automatic”.
Now to set about downgrading my iOS Plex apps !!
@G-Rush: Please stop posting this confusion…
That’s cool, I’m no expert ! All I know is that I seem to have the old PC Desktop UI back rather than the Netflix-like version which appears on the iOS Apps. Or am I wrong in thinking that the PC UI had changed too, since I don’t use the PC interface that much nowadays.
Anyway, my main problem is with the new iPhone and iPad App UI’s which are absolutely awful and now neither look nor behave like the PC app. The inability to browse my libraries on mobile(s) is a killer for me and has got me looking hard at alternatives to Plex after having been a strong advocate for many years.
Will viewing history be maintained when rolling back using this method.?
This worked for me, thanks
