Bulk Editing Metadata

I have a TV show (How It’s Made) on my Plex Media Server that contains 416 episodes over 32 seasons. All of the files are .MP4. I have aligned all of the filenames with Plex standards using FileBot.

The “Title” field in the metadata for each file is incorrect. I want to bulk edit all 416 files and replace the “Title” field in the metadata with a portion of the actual filename.

Here is an example…

Current Filename: How It’s Made - S01E01 - Aluminum Foil; Snowboards; Contact Lenses; Bread.mp4
Current Metadata “Title” Field: s01e01 - The Very First Episode
Metadata “Comments” Field: Discover how aluminum foil and bread are mass-produced. Also, follow the production process of snowboards and see how contact lenses are made.
Desired Metadata “Title” Field: How It’s Made - S01E01 - Aluminum Foil; Snowboards; Contact Lenses; Bread

From a feature request thread I found, it appears that PMS cannot do this natively (which is fine). Problem is, I can’t seem to find a tool that does this. I’m hoping that someone can recommend a application that can do what I’m asking (the key being able to do it in bulk). My apologies if this is already answered in the forums somewhere. I could not find it.

Thank you!

I’ve just gotten around to fiddling with metadata for my MP3 files. I still am hesitant to load up ALL metadata, so I tend to strip out a lot of metadata.

One program I’ve used that is fantastic for editing metadata is Mp3tag. I just tested it out with an MP4 video file and it does accept them and edit the metadata for them. Once you drag all files into the program, you can then select them all and press one button that allows you to set a particular tag (metadata) based on other metadata OR (importantly) the filename itself.

Here is an online version of the wiki/help article for the program once you choose the filename>tag editor: Mp3tag Help - convert tags from/to filenames

Should be able to just use the %title% in the field, and it will put the entirety of the filename (minus the extension) into the title field of the mp4 metadata. If you want to strip out the show title, then you could probably do… How It's Made - %title% instead. That ought to tell the program to ignore the parts of the filename that has that text UP TO the space-dash-space before the SxxExx section, and include everything past that in the title field.

Personally, I prefer to use metadata provided by TVDB, in which case having a blank title field would work, but it’s up to you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up finding a program called MetaX that did the trick.
