But I just want some SOUP!

After hunting thru these posts for a good 6 hours now trying to find a solution to this most likely simple problem, I am about to the point of just giving up. I’m hoping someone can help me out.

  1. I have a Synology DS420j.
  2. I am connected locally via Windows 10.
  3. I have manually downloaded and installed the latest Plex server version (none are actually listed for a 20 series Synology NAS but I found one that installed. Version listed below.) from the Plex site.
  4. Once installed I Run, then Open the Plex Server from the NAS interface after which Chrome opens a new tab on which the Plex page tells me I get so soup. And I kind of like soup…

I have tried un/reinstalling the server multiple times.
I have logged out and back into my account from Windows.
I have even deleted my account and created new with a different email.

No matter what I do it appears that the NAS will not allow me to access the Plex Server.

Please Obi-Wan. You’re our only hope!

Server Version#: PlexMediaServer-1.21.0.3616-d87012962-aarch64

OK. I have done exactly as you instructed. Once the web page opens after step 6 I am immediately greeted by the No Soup garbage. I then sign in and attempt to access the Server settings you point me to but there is no such thing on my screen. No server section listed.

And by the way, thank you for being willing to help me out here. In my readings most of the day on this I see that sometimes you ask for the logs to be zipped up and sent to you. Mine are attached here in case that is of some help in troubleshooting this.(File removed)

I completed those steps. Under authorized devices there are no servers - only web page instances (Chrome) which I deleted. I also tried using Microsoft Edge all with the same result.
As a note, last night I was able to download, and install, and have work correctly, the Windows version of the Plex server. However, once my computer is turned off then all access is gone of course. So I uninstalled that and need the server running on the NAS to maintain access.

To add to trumpy What are the IP addresses involved? (Computer and NAS)

DSM Firewall is not enabled.
No VPN active. I do have NordVPN installed on this computer but actually haven’t used it in quite some time. No VPN active on NAS if that is what you mean.

Computer IP is 96.19.96.205
NAS is 192.168.1.37

How did you get the computer’s IP address? Did you go to something like https://ipchicken.com?

If so, that’s probably the Public/outside/WAN address on your router, where it’s connected to your ISP.

If you’re using Windows 10, here’s how to get your local/LAN IP address:

Find your IP address in Windows - Microsoft Support

Yes. Sorry guys. I misunderstood your request. That 96 IP is my outside (web side of my router) address. On my side the PC IPv4 address is 192.168.1.35.

Just curious, when I pull up an IPConfig window I see that the machine does show that NordVPN virtual adapter as being present. Is there a way to be sure that the Plex Server is not grabbing that adapter? Posted below.

Correct - Nord is using an invalid IP address. And I did indeed disable that adapter and retried connection and still getting no soup.
I sure appreciate you guys’ time and efforts. If you think of anything else I might try let me know and I’ll give it a spin.

Can you please confirm which version of Plex server I should be downloading for my DS420j?

I’ve been installing what I assume is the latest for my processor - the ARMV8 for the 18 series machines. I don’t see anything there for the 20 series.

All ARMv8 systems use the same packages. Synology is not granular by model year.

They are only concerned with processor architecture.

Notice the aarch64 in the name. This is the name Synology assigned.

OK. That is the file I have been using. I just tried the latest instructions and still same outcome. No soup for me. I can accomplish all the steps until I try #9. When I sign into the web interface it thinks for just a sec and then immediately gives me the no soup thing. I can then get into my account and see what looks like a normal Plex screen but there is no presence of my server that I have confirmed is running in Package Center. Very confusing.
Does this look normal?

That message is not hostile and actually expected the first time you access the server.

Engineering decided to add it because some people were getting their IP addresses phished / spoofed.

What you’re seeing there is a verification of:

  1. This isn’t a Plex-Hosted server (because it’s your server – so that makes sense)
  2. The IP address is confirmed as 192.168.1.37

It’s now asking if that’s all good, then it wants to sign in with the email address shown but also gives you the opportunity to change to a different plex account.

Assuming that’s all good, “Sign In”.

Yep. It’s all set right.
I almost smells like something in my router is blocking it. I just installed an Orbi system in the last few days. However, I have no prior experience with Plex to compare against. Do I need to do something with port forwarding or special permissions on the router side to allow connection? I would think not as this is all on my side of the router so ports shouldn’t be in play according to my limited understanding of them. I’m at a loss…

Would you please do the following so we can see what your server is seeing?

On the Synology DSM window (where you control the NAS)

Control Panel - Shared Folders - Highlight the Plex share - EDIT tab.

Now click the Permissions tab.

You will see your name listed there on the left side.
Make sure you have (click the box if needed) R/W (read/write) permission.
Click OK

Next, Open File Station

Click into Plex - Library - Application Support - Plex Media Server

Right-click Logs -> Compress to Logs.zip

when that’s done, download (click) the file to your PC.

Next, upload it here so we can see what’s happening internally.

From there, we’ll know what is happening that’s wrong.

No server settings present.
