Install Plex on Synology

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to setup my Synology RS814RP+ as a Plex Media Server, I followed the guides but when the installation is finished, I go to http://192.168.20.8:32400 and it ask me to sign in to Plex, then when I’m logged in it go in “Search Media Server” and it displays “Download your media Server, download for windows and download for nas”.

I’ve tried to download from here and reinstall Nas’ app but nothing change.

I had download Intel-64-bit (DSM +6.0).
Synology Nas:
Model: RS814RP+
CPU: INTEL Atom D2700
DSM Version: DSM 6.1.5-15254 Update 1

Can you help me?

Stop Plex from running on the NAS, then open File Station and navigate to: Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server and delete plexmediaserver.pid (if it exists) and Preferences.xml.

If you do not see the Plex folder in File Station, then see Q7a on the Synology FAQ’s page, link in my signature.

Restart Plex on the NAS, then type http://Your-NAS-IP-Address:32400/web into your browser and don’t forget to bookmark it.

Also, check to make sure that all of your network devices are on the same subnet. That is, if you use something like 192.168.0.1 to access your router settings, then all of your devices must have an IP address starting with 192.168.0.x where x is different for each device.

Hi,
Thanks for reply.
I’m trying now but after I have restarted Plex Service and go to https://192.168.20.8:32400/web nothing displays, Chrome says:“This site can’t be reached. 192.168.20.8 unexpectedly closed the connection.”

In this Network all of pc are in the same subnet.

Any ideas?

Have you tried using FireFox?

Also, make sure you are signed in by clicking on the ‘Head’ icon (top right of screen) and by going to Plex settings > server > general. If you are asked to ‘claim’ the server, then do so.

Sorry,
I’m going on Https and the site is in Http,
I’m signed in but it ask me to download plex for pc or NAS.
It is in Italian, I’m signed in with my friend’s account who doesn’t have premium account.

If you are in fact signed in using your friends account then no doubt Plex is looking for HIS server and when it finds your server, Plex thinks his server is missing.

If you are local to the server, then try using YOUR Plex account to sign in with. If you are NOT local, then you will need to use an SSH Tunnel to access Plex with.

I’m trying to install local plex for my friend, on his NAS at his home.
I’m writing here with my account but the test it is using his account.

Synology NAS has the ip 192.168.20.8 and I have installed there the app from Synology store and also the one downloaded from Plex site.

Plex start searching for media server but don’t find anything and tell me if I want to download it.

Do the following again:

Stop Plex from running on the NAS by going to DSM Package Center > Installed > Plex and click on the ‘Action’ drop down menu and select ‘Stop’, then open File Station and navigate to: Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server and delete plexmediaserver.pid (if it exists) and Preferences.xml.

If you do not see the Plex folder in File Station, then see Q7a on the Synology FAQ’s page, link in my signature.

Restart Plex on the NAS, then type http://Your-NAS-IP-Address:32400/web into your browser.

When Plex is open in the browser, sign out of Plex by clicking on the ‘Head’ icon (top right of screen) also check that you are signed out in Plex settings > server > general.

Then go to https://plex.tv and sign out of your friends account there also.

Then open Plex in the browser using http://NAS-IP-Address:32400/web and sign in, both from the ‘Head’ icon and in Plex settings > server > general. Make sure you use your friends Plex account details (username + password). If you are asked to ‘claim’ the server then do so.

I’ve tried but nothing change, if you want I can register my screen when i do it.

May I have a copy of the Plex logs please. Open Plex in the browser and go to Plex settings > server > help and click on the download logs button. Attach the .zip file to your post, thanks.

There aren’t server in settings task.

See Q13 on the Synology FAQ’s page and gather the logs manually, link in my signature.

Ok, thanks

Which machine is at 10.10.12.18? If that’s what you’re using to setup PMS, which is on the 192.168.20.x subnet, it will not work.

PMS requires one of two things:

  1. Server and host performing setup to be on the same RFC1918 subnet (e.g. 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 171.16.x.x → 172.31.x.x)
  2. The host using SSH tunnel with port forwarding of port 32400 to the NAS

Ah okay,
thanks, Now I can see the server.

Thanks to all.

OK. Having the same problem. If I go to http:/synologyhost:32400/web/index.html I see the same display in English. Says “Looking for servers…” in the upper left corner.

There is no Plex/Library… in File Station. Google can’t find “Q7a”. My browser doesn’t show your signature with the secret link. Please just put the URL in the message itself.

So far Plex fails in the “easy to use” category.

Well that’s just silly. I made a DNS name and a certificate for the NAS so I could https to its UI on port 5001.

Requiring the naked IP address is obscure and you certainly could have put up a better error message to let folks know about the oddity.

So I added a Music library for “/volume1/music/” which does have mp3’s in it. I get “There are no items in this library”. Do I have to wait for some scan to finish? Do I need to change file permissions somewhere?

OK. Had to go into the “Shared Folder” control panel section and under “music” give RW permission to user “plex”. This should be in some FAQ.

So I had trouble connecting via the Apple TV Plex app, knew the server name but mostly stayed in “Connecting …” (red) state. Every 10 minutes or so would connect but just show me Podcasts, etc. and say “couldn’t find any media”.

Looked at the Synology and Plex was using about 95% of the CPU. With a dozen or so server processes running. I stopped and restarted the Plex server and changed the setting to rescan the media library every 12 hours instead of every hour. I think it was starting a new scan every hour while the previous ones were still running piling up the processes.

Oh, and today I tried connecting to the local-ip-address:32400/web/ address and kept getting “The connection was reset” from Firefox.

Turns out the Plex server seems to have changed from using http on port 32400 to https overnight without telling anyone. (With a bogus self-signed certificate, of course.) Not sure how you’re supposed to figure that out just by getting TCP connection resets. (The Synology GUI has a different port number for https, so you know what your’re doing there.)
