I do not have any type of DVR associated with Plex. I have recorded streaming content using Audial One software that is is dropped in a Plex library folder. Is it possible to use Plex commercial skip on this library folder?
I’m no expert in this area, but I do have a TV tuner and DVR setup in my Plex server. I think all you would have to do is setup a new library for Live TV, and then place the unedited video file into the folder you directed recordings to go to when setting up the library.
A couple of things, what OS are you running? What processor do you have? Commercial skipping, according to the Plex docs, is processor intensive, however, that can be somewhat relative depending on your processor. I’m not sure if the commercial scanning task is single or multi threaded, so depending on that factor, having a higher single threaded clock speed or having more threads cpuld make a difference.
You will have to add a tuner device (or some piece of software that pretends to be a tuner.)
Not to my knowledge. It’s just avoids the recording getting touched. Because the ad detection is neither 100% accurate, nor is it guaranteed that the cutting procedure is producing a flawless result. There are some reports of incomplete files and broken playback after the ads were cut.
TS containers which are taken directly off the air are not exactly easy to handle, particularly when it comes to seeking to an exact position in the file. Errors in the transmission can also wreak havoc in the processing chain. TV devices are equipped to gloss over errors (to a degree), but if you feed such faulty files into ffmpeg and similar software, the results can sometimes be not as expected.
Good to know. I’ve always just left the markers there as file size is nit a concern, and have noticed when skipping the ads I have to go back 30 seconds because it skipped too far. Tuners, at least where I’m from, are not expensive. If your not planning on using it, either a cheap second hand one would work, or like Otto said, I’m sure there is either a physical spoofing device, or a Github software project that can overcome this.
I understand now. Just something Plex will recognize as a tuner and don’t use it for recording.
For what I am doing I could be happy with either fast forward preview thumbnails or marking ads. Both seem to take some processing power that I don’t currently have in my Plex test server. I will have to upgrade the hardware.
Thanks for the idea. I was hoping for a hardware solution. Simple. I found a cheap Microsoft Xbox One usb tuner, but it did not work. I should have checked the forum, first. Many posts on that one.
I see all the supported tuners. I did not realize how pricey they can be. I mean they seem pricey for someone like me who does not plan at all to record using it. I just need it to unlock commercial skip processing features.
I don’t even care if it can pickup a TV signal as long as I can drop my files in the target directory for processing.
Why? It doesn’t make sense to connect an actual tuner hardware device, if all you want to do is to convince Plex that it has access to a tuner. A free software as recommended above is the cheapest option.
Otto - The straight answer is that I think Xteve is beyond my capabilities.
I have installed Xteve, installed NSSM and have it automatically starting as a service. I have been trying to follow this guide. I got down to " 5. xTeVe Ongoing Configuration". I simply have no idea what I am doing. I don’t even care if I can record from Xteve.
I just want Plex to recognize it so I can setup ad removal processing.
