Can I buy a cheap CPU and offload transcoding requirements to dedicated GPU instead?

I’m looking to create a custom NAS with the capability of transcoding two 4k source videos simultaneously…
I’d like to keep the costs down as much as possible.

In light of this, I was wondering if (let’s say) I bought a dedicated Nvidia GTX 1050, could I safely pair it with a Core i3-6100?

I’m particularly curious about the issues around HW-encoding and subtitles: Hardware encoding slower than software encoding when burning subs

Thanks!

You want an i5.

You need enough CPU power to burn subtitles AND transcode audio – in two simultaneous streams – at whatever bitrate you’re running.

Think about your need now,
Look at your growth in the past 2 years

Plan 3-4 years out.

Ok, thanks ChuckPa!
