Can I give my shows seasons titles in my filesystem without messing up how Plex sees them?

I’ve been watching a lot of Anime recently and I’ve been running into this issue.

So let’s say the show is “Aria”. The first season is called Aria the Animation, the 2nd season is called Aria the Natural, and the 3rd season is called Aria the Origination, if they’re formatted in my filesystem like this:

Desktop/TV Shows/Aria/Season 1 - Aria the Animation
Desktop/TV Shows/Aria/Season 2 - Aria the Natural

and etc… Plex doesn’t recognize them. I’ve noticed that when looking at episode data, Plex ignores everything after a dash, so why doesn’t it do the same for seasons? is there any way to title your seasons within your filesystem that im unaware of? It works just fine if it’s Desktop/TV Shows/Aria/Season 1, 2, 3, but I haven’t found a way to put the title at the end of the folder name that actually works.

If there is no way, I think treating season titles the same way episode titles are treated wouldn’t hurt anybody and might be beneficial towards a certain group of people.

With “doesn’t recognize them” do you mean:
Plex doesn’t read the season titles and display them
or
Plex doesn’t recognize the tv show as a whole anymore
?

it’s all about the naming conventions and rules… individual media files can have a suffix (in case of a tv episode, everything after the ...SxxEyy segment where xx represents the season and yy the episode number), the Season xx folders can’t. So there’s literally no way at the moment to do what you’re aiming for.

It doesn’t recognize the multiple seasons. So for example, if the first season has 25 episodes, and the 2nd season has 25 episodes, it will only display one season, but the episodes will be overlapping, so the first episode displayed will have 2 overlapping episodes contained in it.

First thing to check: look up your show at TheTVDB and verify the episodes and seasons on there are actually the same as you have them
https://www.thetvdb.com/

Second: prevent embedded metadata from mp4 and m4v files from messing up the matching

Go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Plex will never read the title of a season from the folder name. In fact, it doesn’t even support different names than Season 01 etc.
The best you can do is to ‘edit’ the season after you added the show completely and put the title of the season into the ‘comment’ field.

I actually figured it out lmfao

i can title the season folder whatever i want as long as my episodes are formatted like this:

S1E01 - That Wonderful Miracle…

until now, i’ve been formatting them like this:

01 - That Wonderful Miracle…

because i thought that having the season in the episode filename while also having it within the folder would be redundant. however, it lets me title the season the way I want to without having to go through any bother.

thank you though, both of you. this might be good for future reference as well though.

it’ll get even better if you follow the media preparation instructions
