Can I Install Plex on Now TV (Roku) using Android?

Hello.

This chap shows how to install Plex onto a Now TV box (converted Roku box) using a pc.

I'd be most grateful if anyone can tell me is this possible using only an Android tablet? Bought my Mum a Google Nexus 10 and she wants to watch the videos I put on her tablet on tv instead. The tv has no usb slots so a Now TV box could act as a really cheap media player.

Many thanks if anyone can offer advice.

Ok I got round to trying it and the answer is yes you can.

It is a browser based install of a zip file. So i presume the zip can be stored on the android tablet and uploaded to the NowTV

Yes that works fine ,

I just installed Plex rarflix (specially modified version for now tv) to a now tv box using a nook HD + with no problems .

Sorry just re read the first post and I think it might be possible to play movies from the tablet to a now TV box using the Plex android app but I have not tried it .

I use the now TV to stream my movies from home at my folks place via PMS installed on my pc at home .

you can play media that is managed by the Plex Media Server but you can cast it from the Plex Android app as a Remote / Companion for the Now RARflix Plex channel - see https://plexapp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/sections/200276908-Plex-Companion

Hi folks thanks for your responses.

I haven't managed to get back to my Mum's to finish this but I'm not quite clear checking out the above links, can the video files stored on the tablet be streamed to the NowTV box?

The tablet has the Plex for Android app installed.

Many thanks for your help.

You stream from Plex Media Server and you can do that via the tablet Plex for Android app but you cannot stream tablet media

Ah ok.

Clearly I didn't research this thoroughly enough before I bought it. I'll be getting a refund for that then I guess!

Thankyou for your help.

Once setup she would just use the now tv remote to scroll and select what she wants to watch. Just sign into the plex app on the now tv box like the Android app and she would be good to go.

I think you misunderstood the problem. Apparently Lumixer and her mum don't have any PMS server.

The media they want to watch is just stored on an Android tablet, and they planned to use the Plex client on the "Now TV" box to access it, which simply can't work.

All Plex clients need some Plex server, so without any server involved there's no way for the Plex client on the "Now TV" to access the media.

It can probably be done by other means though such as finding some SMB or DLNA server app for the tablet, and then using some client capable of accessing such servers on the "Now TV". If that is a generic Android box it should be able to run XBMC, like I've done on a number of Android units (eg: OUYA, Pivos Xios, etc).

But the best solution would of course be to use a real PC for serving the media from, either by PMS or normal SMB file sharing, with Plex client or XBMC (respectively) used on the "Now TV".
