Can I log into my Plex account from another house and watch my NAS Library of movies?

Hello all. First post. I am not a real tech guy, so I apologize in advance if I am asking a foolish question. I have a NAS library of a few hundred movies. I am currently using the “free” version of Plex and love it. It works great at my home. I am totally willing to buy the Premium version, if only to support the platform. My question is…if I visit my son’s home out of state, can I somehow download Plex on his smart TV and log into MY Plex account and watch my movie library? Would he also have to have the Premium version? Is this even doable? It would be SO great to have this ability. I am also trying to better understand what additional features one gets when upgrading to the Premium version. Thank you in advance for any good help. Respectfully, Frank D.

Yes you can, and you don’t need a premium account.
You could share your content with your son, he just needs a regular account on Plex TV.
Check the DOCs lot of good information there.

You need to set up remote access which may require configuration in your router. Category : Remote Access and Server Sharing | Plex Support

you’re better off not using your own account as well so you can maintain suggestions and watched history. new account and share is the way.

yeah please don’t let others sign into your account.

Thank you so much for this info. I will check out the DOC’s and have a friend who knows more than I do about Plex to assist. It is great that you are allowed to share. I can understand that this is the best way…if someone else logged into your account it would mess up watched history, etc. Thank you all for taking the time to help…! Thank you also for helping a “newbie”. I think I may upgrade to Premium just to support this good level of help. I am not sure about the additional benefits yet. I have so much to learn…

I have created an second account for myself that I use for Viewing.
I travel a lot and use that on the road… So I don’t use my Admin account anywhere other than on my local network at home.

So…I spoke to my friend, who told me that I needed to post here again to explain that my content is on a NAS Synology. He says this would make a difference. It IS hardwired to my hub which is hardwired to my router. Can I still do this mamboing sharing feature with how my system works? My smart TV sees both my NES and my Plex “sees” my NES with no problem. Thank you in advance for any help…Sadly, I can build a house, fix a car and deliver a baby no problem…but I am a wuss when it comes to this network stuff…Thank you!

Doesn’t matter where the content is in relation to the server so long as it’s accessible, how you share your Plex media with others is always the same. Nothing fancy needed just because your content is on a NAS.

I have zero content on my physical server and have second server which shares all content to the main server Plex is installed on (all on my local network). As long as everything is fast enough to keep up - you’ll have no problems.

Thank you. My “tech” friend is coming over tomorrow to help me with this. I appreciate all the kind help!
