I have a 1Tb internal hd on my iMac and Plex now takes up 1/5 of it.
The main problem folder is located under Library, Application Support, Plex Media Server,
Media 186.4 GB.
Metadata 8 GB
Plug-in Support 5.1 GB
Updates 2 GB
After some research they recommend that you keep it installed on an internal drive but the numbers I have here seem huge. Granted I have around 20 TB of data stored on my Plex server. I really need a NAS server but I’m currently using a bunch of External Drives all connected to my iMac. I believe that these files are thumbnails, metadata, and everything needed to make it run smoothly.
I have optimized database, I have clean bundles set as a weekly task, but am not sure what else to do.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Server Version#:1.23.6.4881
Player Version#:4.57.4
If you can make sure that external drive is connected whenever you’re using your Plex Media Server, you can use a symbolic link to make this happen.
stop your server
copy the server data directory to its designated target location
for safety… rename the original server data directory but keep it in place (for now)
create a symbolic link to the new server data directory and place it to the original location, using the directory‘s original name
restart your server and confirm your libraries and metadata are still available
Once you’re ok, you can delete the original folder (the one we renamed in #xbox-360
Keep in mind: if your external server data directory isn’t available when you start your Plex Media Server, it’ll consider this is a new install and create a new server on your local system
So I need to create the link in Terminal, ink not exactly sure what the command I have to give it is once I’m there. I don’t believe that you can create one through finder.
So if I create a link an external drive and it’s going to have the same name as the original?
So currently it’s Macintosh HD > Users > mynamedesktop > Library > Application Support > Plex Media Server
In that folder there are 10 sub-folders. The largest being Media > Local Host > with 16 sub- folders 0-9 and A-F each containing about 1000 .bundle files.
So am I going to link the Plex Media Server folder or just the media folder inside?
Also finder doesn’t allow you to create an alias and I’m not exactly sure I understand the command I’m going to have to give the terminal.
It’s just a little confusing.
It’s it normal to have this folder be 200 GB? I saw others complaining about it being 33 GB so maybe I’m storing to much data there in the first planks l place?
Ok I will give it a try, so basically I am copying the folder onto a drive, does Plex need to be stored while I’m copying it or do I stop it once it’s done and I’m creating the link to the new location.
Will this cause any issues in the future, making it run slower etc? The drives are connected directly to my desktop but I read somewhere that it might be better to connect them to my router. It’s this true because I had it setup that way before but transferring files seemed to take much longer and it gave me more issues.
Anyways, thanks for the advice and I will try this today.
