Moving PMS Application Support folder to new drive

Server Version#: 1.28.1.6104-788f82488
Player Version#: 4.84.1

I have read a number of articles here and on Reditt about moving the PMS Application Support folder to a new location, most of it has been for the linux version of PMS, but I am not that techie to decipher some of the tech speak.

Can anyone walk me thru moving the folder to a new drive?

The current file path is:
/Users/jdecamp/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server

I would like it to be:
/Volumes/C Scratch/Plex Media Server

The reason for the move is that it has grown to over 400Gb on a 512 Gb SSD boot drive and I would like the drive to have more headroom. The new drive is a fast 2Tb SSD and would allow for expansion of the folder over time if needed. (Yes, I know I could disable previews and it would greatly reduce the size of the PMS folder, but I like the previews :-).

I have tried the obvious - quitting PMS, copying the folder over, moving the original to trash and making a simple alias of the new folder and putting it in the old place, but that doesn’t work. :frowning:
I am familiar with Terminal and can use it if need be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

From Why is my Plex Media Server directory so large?

macOS

The easiest way to re-locate the data directory on macOS is typically to use a standard symbolic link (symlink) to place the directory in another location and then point to it from the original location. It’s important to note that it needs to be an actual symlink and not an alias or shortcut.

See this thread for an example:

As mentioned in the thread, be careful if using an external drive, as it is easy for it to disconnect from the system.

Also, no exFAT formatted drives. MacOS Extended works (reference).

This worked perfectly for me.
THANK YOU!!
