Can I rename a folder with movies without losing customizations?

I’m using Plex Server on Windows 11.

I want to rename some of my folders containing my movies. Is there any way to rename a folder and inform Plex of the new folder name without losing all my customizations such as collections, customized cover art selections, etc.?

As an example, suppose I have a folder called “Movies” and I want to rename that folder to “Blu-Ray Movies”, can I perform that rename without losing all my Plex customizations?

I know that I could rename the folder, then manage my library and change the folder location for the library, but I’m concerned that Plex might treat this as if it was a whole new library and cause me to lose all my customizations I’ve worked so hard to create.

Most of the time, a simple Scan library files action should do that.
If you want to make sure Plex doesn’t accidentally drop items of “lost files” before recognizing their new location, disable Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Empty trash automatically after every scan before doing the library scan.

Same applies if you want to change the name of your library folder…

  1. Preparation

    • Preferably disable automatic/scheduled updates
    • Disable automatic emptying of the trash
    • Refresh the library metadata (to avoid mixups if single library items are still linked to an old agent).
  2. Add the new library folder name to your library

  3. Scan the library files and wait for it to complete

  4. Remove the old library folder (name) from your library

  5. Rescan the library, empty the trash

Thanks, that helped greatly.
