Renaming folders and files with out plex treating them as new additions

so I have been slowly starting to rename my movies to include the imdb id.
but when I do that plex acts as if the movie is new.
is there a way to have plex not do that?

Settings > Library > disable Empty trash automatically after every scan

Rename your folder, rescan your library and Plex will detect the new location but not remove the old one. Go to Get Info menu and see if the new and old paths are there. If yes, then you can manually empty trash.
