Can music on my Plex server be played through the Alexa Echo speaker?

Very confusing - Alexa says Remote connection is disabled yet Plex says it is enabled

@mamvcivm I needed to set port forwarding on my router to get Plex Media through it’s firewall. I also needed to reboot the server and router to get everything aligned.

Your plex media server seems to indicate that remote access is enabled. Try rebooting everything.

@mamvcivm I needed to set port forwarding for the Plex Media Server within my router. I also needed to reboot the server and the router.

Have you tried rebooting your server and router?

Today I learned about the ability to play to Amazon Echo devices from Plex. I found that asking plex to play an audio file does not work on the second generation Echo Dots. It does work on the original Echo Dot and original (big) Echo and Amazon Tap. Possibly this is a firmware issue with second generation Echo systems.

Note that I have 3 of the second generation Dots that will not play, although it accepts the command and responds as if it will play the music. No audio comes out after the response, nor does the server activity show something is playing (both of these work find on the original Echos).

I have a second generation dot and the new spot and neither work. It announces the song but then I get silence. My router doesn’t support Nat Hairpin which I think is the issue. I can get the Alexa skill “my media” to play music through the dot and spot so it has to be something with plex.

@Jmiranda7777 my setup was working (Echo Show & Dot RS03OR i think that is gen 2) but now I’m getting silence like you. Echo announces "playing music by " but nothing is played. Almost like it’s playing it on another device.

[UPDATE to prev post]
I just tested on an original Echo and it’s working (same network as others echos)

to recap;
~2 weeks ago it was working on Echo Show and Echo Dot model: RS03OR (never tried on original Echo).
Now, only works on original Echo, doesn’t work on Echo Show nor Echo Dot model: RS03OR

[UPDATE 12/22] and this morning it’s working on the Echo Show.

Well, I just got notified that my Amazon is dropping support for the Music Storage Account service – I had my whole CD collection uploaded, and was playing it all over the house across the 5 or 6 Alexa devices we have (a mix of Echo Show, Echo, Dot’s and Spot’s) streaming from Amazon music.

Looks like I won’t be able to do that for much longer, and came here looking for an Alexa/Plex solution - I have the same music collection stored losslessly on my own FreeNAS server, with a Plex Server frontend.

I just wanted to say - keep up the good work, and with this announcement from Amazon - it looks like this feature will become quite important in the future.

With an original echo, and version 1.10.1.4602 of plex I still suffer “no music”.

Echo can see Plex, and Alexa happily tells me what I’ve recently added to my music collection, but does nothing when asked to play a track.

Can anyone suggest how best to diagnose this issue further?

Thanks Geoff. I’ve made some progress… I’ve configured port forwarding in both the plex server and my router last night and this evening it worked. However it only plays approx one minute of music then stops :frowning: I gave to tell it to play again and it stops again after about a minute…

@mamvcivm I’m afraid you are experiencing the same issue that I and many others are experiencing. I think the evidence from the forum leads one to believe that this issue lies with the Plex skill.

See this discussion for further details - https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1578564#Comment_1578564

I was lead to believe that the Plex developers were looking at the issue. However, it has now been a number of weeks and no fix has been issued and the Plex developers/administrators have made no comment or given an update. Which, of course, is very frustrating for all those affected.

Just a thought as I am not near my dot’s to test but…
I wonder if this issue is related to the wireless network it is connected to, meaning the 2.4 or the 5Ghz network.
I believe mine is connected to the 2.4 Ghz (need to check though to be certain)

Just a thought regarding the people that actually get it to work, but only for a minute. I seem to recall reading someplace that the “Free” Plex Player would only play the first minute of a Video until it was “Purchased” or something along those lines. Not sure what (if any) restrictions exist in the current players or might be based on the device the player is running on.

May be nothing, but also might explain the “minute” cut-off some experience.

So I just tried this out today, and voila! Plex is now playing music directly through the echo dot. I then connected the echo dot to my bluetooth soundbar and the soundbar is now playing music as well as echo dot responses.

Here’s what I did to get it working:

  1. Logged into my router and turned off UPnP and turned it back on.
  2. I then set my Portforwarding to (internal:32400, external:32400 with a static IP).
  3. Next I logged into my Plex Server and set the Remote Access to manual port 32400 (it was getting an automatic port thru UPnP other than 32400, which is bad in this case if you want music to stream thru the echo dot).
  4. Finally I rebooted my router and then tested it out by asking Alexa “Ask Plex to play Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie” and PRESTO!!! Success!

I gave it a quick go on my Gen-1 Echo last night… “Ask plex to play A Forest, by The Cure”… my blue ring spun for a second or two then nothing…

Success for me too! Thank you!

Just to confirm, I’m using a PR4100 NAS, Echo Dot (2nd gen) and a Sky Q router. I’ll try on my Echo Show tomorrow.

@“dseanjj@yahoo.com” does the whole track play and then continues to the next track?

My problem is not starting to play but continuing to play as playback stops after about a minute.

I’ve tried starting a few albums/tracks on mine, playing around 10 tracks all the way though; I haven’t experienced any stopping ahead of time.

On one occasion, when asking for an album, I did experience no music appearing after Alexa’s confirmation; however, it all worked fine when I asked a second time.

@Geoff555, mine plays all the way thru. Follow the steps in my first post and yours should come up with no problem. It’s all about getting that remote access settings correct. The only issue that I have with plex is that I speak fast and it often confuses what I said, or I’ll have two songs with the same name and it won’t differentiate between the two.

I’m currently working on getting it to play playlists thru Plex. I’ve named them simple names like “One” or “Two”, but Alexa can’t find the darn playlists no matter what I name them. I’ve been trying to get this thing up and running since last week and it is a beast. However, once all the kinks have been worked out, I’ll have the whole house wired for voice.

I already had remote access working (but wasnt using port 32400), but I tried your suggestion anyway and changed my plex settings and router port forward settings to use 32400. Still experiencing the same issue. Alexa/echo can access my plex library, find a song, and announce it is playing it, but the song doesnt play. :frowning:
