Can ONLY get Indirect connection on the same network!!! Tried everything!

Hi Guys, I know this has been brought up many times. I’ve tried searching through the forums and comments, and tried several of those “solutions,” but they don’t work for me.

Plex had been working fine for me for a while. I even loved it so much I upgraded to Plex Pass or whatever its called. But last few months have been experiencing issues… A lot of times I can’t connect to my server, and when it finally does connect, it ONLY will connect with an indirect server… Which loses quality on all my videos, to the point where I don’t even want to watch them anymore… I mean who wants to watch Transformers all pixelated where you can’t even tell what’s going on?! So frustrating! Its at 1080p quality also, looks fine on when I play it directly from my Plex server on my desktop, but awful on all my other devices.

I’ve updated my plex server, I’ve changed my DNS on my router to 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4. and nothing helps. I’ve tried playing with the Secure Connections, Preferred, Disabled, Required… Nothing helps… Only thing I haven’t tried is the “DNS Rebinding” solution… I don’t see that in my router’s settings… But I also don’t know where to look or what I’m really looking for… I don’t see anything with that name on the LAN settings tab, which is where I changed the DNS ports to Google’s. I only see LAN IP Settings, DHCP Server Settings, DNS Override (which is where I enter the DNS Server IP), DNS Relay, NAT, & UPnP…

Any help is much appreciated! I am pretty computer savvy, but this networking stuff is just beyond me… If I get specific instructions I’m sure I can figure it out, with the help of you guys!

I’m using Plex mainly on my Apple TV 4, but the same issue happens with my iPhone 7 Plus also… Always an indirect connection… PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks in Advance!

What’s the IP Net in use?

Please provide us with which router you are using.

Sorry, are you asking for my IP address? Why do you need that? Or is IP Net different? Where could I find that? To access my router I visit an IP 192.168.. Is that the one you need?

My router is:

ARRIS
Model TG1682G
42 MHZ Upstream

Is that enough info?

That was almost what I needed, due to the fact, that one thing that could cause this, is if you are not using private address space on your local LAN.

When talking about IP Net, we mean like 192.168.1.0/24 meaning the address from 192.168.1.1->192.168.1.254 is in use, on both the server and the devices.

Another thing that can cause this, is that some routers have an option to have wireless on one net, and cabled LAN on another.

So to answer correctly to my Q, I need IP and mask of both PMS (Server) and the device playing

I don’t believe your router has DNS Rebinding protection. What OS is PMS installed on?

Thank you SO much for your response! My IP Net is 192.168.1.0… Not sure where or how to find out the IP Net for my Plex App on my Apple TV, though…

The IP and mask of the PMS (Server) would be for my main iMac that has all the content I want to stream? Or is that found somewhere else? If not, it is 192.168.1.0.

Where can I find the IP Address the Plex app is using on my Apple TV? Just the regular Apple TV settings? I remember it showed the DNS was changed to the Google public DNS… But I can check that IP also if you need it…

Yeah I couldn’t find that setting, but I saw other settings so I was hoping one of those would do the same thing.

My main Plex Server is on my iMac running Sierra… But I only recently switched to Sierra, before that I was using Yosemite I believe and it was working for a while, and then started experiencing this issue every time, on all of my Apple TVs in my house, on the same network. Same thing with my iPhone… But it plays fine from another computer when I access my Plex server… It just seems to happen on everything except the computers…

Did this ever get resolved? I can’t find a single instance where anyone ever fixes this issue and then posts exactly what did it. I’m experiencing this exact same issue (Plex always worked, recent update to server happened, now it’s always stuck on indirect connection even when it’s on the same network).

Also having this issue. Pms is on Ubuntu. Can’t access directly even though on the same subnet.
