Can someone please explain this HTPC thing for me, and if I should care?

So I’m reading in the news that some people are not happy with the move away from HTPC. I can find the definition for HTPC but don’t understand if I need to care or not. Here is my setup.

Plex Server on an iMac and all the media is located on an attached external drive.
MacBook Pro with Plex app
Windows 10 with Plex app
iPad with Plex app
Android phones with Plex app
Samsung TV with Plex app

All the client apps are accessing the iMac for movies, music, etc.

Thank you in advance

an htpc is typically a pc type computer (small form factor or even a full size tower) that is hooked directly to your big screen tv and used (generally) solely for media playback.

typically there will be some kind of custom remote control solution, possibly along with sound output to a receiver for surround.

as for plex, the current (now deprecating) PMP windows program has 2 different modes, a desktop/web mode, and a ‘tv’ mode. Kind of like how steam has a full screen tv mode, which is used as the player for plex to the tv.

People are upset because the pmp app and tv mode are going away (or at least are not going to be supported soon).

It doesn’t sound like any of your examples I would consider htpc.

Nothing is changing with Plex Media Server.

“Plex Media Player” is the app that is being discontinued

This screenshot is in TV mode.

So how does this affect me, is what I really want know. I already updated the Windows app, which doesn’t scale correctly so it’s unusable because I can’t see the small font. Do I dare update the Mac app? And will my Samsung TV app still work?

“Plex Media Player” is not a generic name I am using to describe the many player apps we make for various devices. It is a very specific app. It has no bearing on the app for Samsung. it has no bearing on the Plex Media Server

Do you use the app “Plex Media Player”? Look in your Applications folder or Program Files. Is it there?

Okay, let me put this in the simplest possible form. Also please do not assume that every user here knows/understands/cares about technical lingo of ANY sort. And I do not care about the server, I’m talking about whatever Plex is doing that is making the news the last day or two. Like breaking stuff - like the new Windows 10 app (scaling).

Fact: I had my setup working just fine. Whatever change you guys made with the “players” (i.e apps I use on all my listed devices to view content that is running on the the server) - do they affect my setup??? Yes or no? Or do I have to start downloading, uninstalling, reinstalling, launching command lines, looking in directories, etc?

I am not asking a trick or technical question. We make multiple apps that can be used on both/either type of computer. There are two different apps that can be used on a Mac. There are 3 different apps that can be used on Windows. That is why just saying “MacBook Pro with Plex app” or “Windows 10 with Plex app” is not descriptive enough.

How about this. You take a full screen screenshot of whichever app you use on your Windows 10 computer. and a screenshot of the app you use on your MacBook Pro. And I will tell you if you are affected or not.

All of these apps listed below are not affected by the announcement at all.
Plex Media Server
iPad with Plex app
Android phones with Plex app
Samsung TV with Plex app
