Can the PS4 Plex app play music in the background whilst playing a game? The PS4 media app & the Spotify app have this capability but when I start to play a track in Plex and then hit the home button the music pauses. I have seen people elsewhere on the internet saying it works but without giving any explanation. Am I missing something obvious? A setting somewhere? The PS4 Media app works but doesn’t list tracks in the correct order and Plex’s interface is generally much better so I’d rather use it if possible…
+1
I’ve observed the same behavior as ncklls. Music playback doesn’t seem to be integrated with media functions of the PS4 at all. No background play and the currently playing song/play back controls don’t display display in the ps menu.
Not possible at the moment, I’m going to put in an official “feature request”
Oh yeah and if we’re at it: Volume control in the QuickMenu would be totally awesome!
To resurrect this old thread, I’d like to put in another vote for background playing. Spotify integrates so well on the PS4 so it’s too bad that Plex doesn’t. Having playback controls in the quick menu is awesome.
I’d use DLNA in the meantime but I can’t get that working (the Plex app works fine though).
Yes- Go through the Media Player app and Plex Media Server is recognized.

Wow, gotta try this later. Background music is a must.
It says no playable media available. Sigh
would love this feature as well! Spotify has it and playing games with my own music library would be very convenient on ps4 and xbox one.
Anyone able to find out how to do it yet? I’ve got plex downloaded to my ps4. I can listen to music but only when the app is open. When I go to home screen(to play a game), the music stops immediately. I’ve went into the media player on the ps4. It recognizes my plex media server from my computer, but says “there is no playable media”
What’s happening is likely that the music you have is in a format the PS4 Media Player doesn’t recognize. Plex will (and has to) transcode all music no matter what into a video container format because that’s all the Plex client has available to it on PS4, and the server knows that, but doesn’t know anything about other clients like the PS4 Media Server.
The PS4 Media Player will play more formats, but it’s still pretty limited, basically mp3, ogg, and FLAC iirc. The Plex server won’t transcode anything for the PS4 Media Player by default. There might be a way to force Plex to transcode for the Media Player, but that also might be an old hack that required a plugin, I don’t remember.
If you don’t have a lot of music, you could try converting it to FLAC, which is lossless, or try a dedicated server like PS3MediaServer if that’s still around.
I’d settle for the music player to work IN the app without crashing before adding it as background music to games.
Currently, I can’t play a full album in sequence without it crashing. It would be nice to play a photo gallery while listening to music, but it crashes even faster doing that on the PS4 app.
