Looks like our requests have been heard!
There is now a Synology build of the PMS 1.6.0 preview 3 with hw transcoding:
Just upgrading to a ds916+ 8gb from ds412+, and as a plex lifetime member, I Would love to have this feature added…
As the nvidia shield works well with it.
Many thanks plex.
Keep up the good work
It has been added to transcoding beta build

I downloaded the latest PMS (1.6.1.3722) for Synology on my 916+ but I don’t see any options for HW transcoding and when I stream videos that are transcoded I still see my CPU pegged at 99%. Anyone know how to enable or verify that the HW transcoding is actually working? Are we sure it’s actually enabled for the Synology NAS or if it’s only enabled for Linux CPUs that also have GPUs. I seem to remember reading that on some other thread…
Get a QNAP NAS. They transcode and are far more powerful and feature-laden.

HW transcoding is not yet in the regular builds. You need to download the preview build of PMS 1.6.0.3720 posted in this thread: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/250946/plex-media-server-hardware-transcoding-preview-3-1-6-0-3720/p1
To get it working, follow these steps:
- Uninstall the official Plex package in DSM – leave your library and metadata intact.
- Install the preview build linked above – this should pick up on your existing library and metadata. Do not start PMS yet.
- Get a terminal open on your Synology (e.g., via SSH).
- Give Plex permissions to use the HW transcoder: (i.e., sudo chmod -R 777 /dev/dri).
- Start PMS.
- Log in to PMS.
- Go to Settings > Server > Transcoder option page
- Select Show Advanced option.
- Check the box next to “Use hardware acceleration when available (Experimental)”.
- Save changes.
You should now have working HW acceleration. You can test it out by playing video or starting a conversion and checking the Activity page. If HW transcoding is working, you’ll see something like “Transcoding H264 (hw) to H264 (hw)”.
Will it work with ds 716 + II ???
I agree 100%. Nothing but frustration with my 916+ right now and Plex.
I would love this on my 916 as well
I just voted for this
I already bought the DS916+ (on it’s way as I speak), but I intend to use it only for storage as HW transcoding is not possible.
If it becomes available later, then I can probably stop using my PC as plex server and directly install PMS on the NAS.
But I can see many ppl are asking for it for more than a year… not sure if it will be available one day
Go Plex Dev !
I hope it will integrate in further releases. Like Plex more then the native apps from synology.
+1 Just got my DS 916+. Hoping to run PMS on it.
