Can you edit metadata locally after import?

Quick question here. Once i’ve first scanned new music on Plex, can i change the artist, album title etc by editing on my local drive? It seems to me that once music is initially scanned and added to Plex, editing the metadata locally does nothing to change what appears in Plex… So even if I completely change the title of a song / album etc of the source file, the song will still appear as it first did when it was originally imported. I am aware that you can change all of this by editing the file from within Plex, but this seems odd to me. Am i missing something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you edit the metadata in your files, you need to tell Plex to ‘refresh metadata.’ You can find the command on the overflow menu for albums, artists, or entire libraries (careful - this can take some time, if you have a big library. It also will overwrite any customizations you’ve made to tags within Plex, if you didn’t lock them).

Couple of notes:

  1. When you edit the metadata within Plex, it does not write back to the embedded tags in your media files. You are strictly editing Plex’s database. Plex never modifies your files. The only exception is that you can delete files from the hard drive via Plex, but only if you’ve enabled that feature.
  2. If you change the filename of your media files, you’ll need to run the ‘Scan Library Files’ command.
