[Feature Request] Ability to save/overwrite local metadata

I would like the ability to be able to save/overwrite the metadata for the local files on my hard drive.

So for example if i had to restore windows or move my enitre music library to another hard drive, or something similar, then the changes i make in plex will affect the file forever. I believe there is the ability to save changes or backup database within plex, but i don't believe this affects the actual file.

the consistency or uniformity in plex and local files is what i am most interested in.

Plex does not want to ever modify an original file. You can backup the database to save any changes you made. I don’t think they will ever add the ability to modify a file.

Honestly, if you want the metadata updated in the file itself. You should be using a tool to do that on your file system. I, personally, do not want plex to do anything with my files. I'd prefer if something that downloads metadata from the internet, doesn't have any permission to modify my media files and possibly causing corruption. I can see how plex would not want to be on the hook for something like that.

Yes - I'm in favour of using a separate, dedicated tool for editing metadata in my files. Don't let Plex do it automatically. I've had endless problems with Microsoft's music players (WMP, Xbox Music, Zune) and music servers (Windows Home Server) deciding that they'll stomp all over my carefully edited music metadata and cause havoc. The last thing I want is for Plex to start doing the same.

yea, you guys have good points. i would probably not want plex editing my files after i think about it. I was just "wishing" that i could make changes to the files themselves remotely, instead of 'remembering' to change the files when i get back to the server location. I have used mediamonkey for several years to edit and tag my metadata of 37k songs and it has worked wonderfully. thanks for your help and feedback.

Early 2021 clean-up: aside of Plex’ long-standing position not to touch/change local files, this is a duplicate
