Can you output video directly from computer via HDMI to TV, but still organize media with Plex Server?

I want to be able to use Plex to organize my movies/media (on external 5TB HDD) through the interface, but output directly via HDMI to my TV when I play a movie - I can’t seem to find any topics that address this.

I don’t want to stream or transcode the media, just select it in PLEX then output to TV using direct play from my folder/external HDD…can’t seem to figure out how to do it.

You would need to have to use plex web or plex client on the machine as well. To output out via HDMI you will need to have a HDMI output on the computer or add a video card that had a HDMI output.

You need 2 apps

  1. Plex media Server to organise everything
  2. Plex Media Player to play it without transcoding. Plex Web will generally force a transcode as browsers have limited codec support

Output to an HDMI TV is exactly the same as outputting to an HDMI monitor.
You can play media through the Plex Web app, http://localhost:32400/web

Yes, but neither can you use HDMI audio passthrough, nor Sync switching.

Plus the inability of web browser a, to decode a lot of codecs.
