Cannot access local server with apps

Hi,

A quick question: Do (Android) apps need the Plex Server to be accessible remotely even when on the same LAN?

I am asking since I run a server which I don’t intend on accessing remotely, and I can connect to it just fine using the web player (sees it as ‘nearby’), but when using apps (2 x Android TVs, 1 Android phone), the server is unreachable despite being on the same LAN as the machine accessing through web.

That being said, the four client devices are not technically on the same LAN as the server (it’s behind a VPN), but since the web app is working fine, I’m expecting the behavior of the mobile apps to be by design?

No remote access required to access your server from inside your home network.
However… for that the devices need to be on the same network – Plex considers a different subnet or VPN as another network.

With a Plex Pass membership you can tell Plex what networks to consider to be part of your LAN. Without that your only shot will be to enable remote access.
