Cannot access Plex locally (same network)

I’m losing my mind. I’ve been trying things for the past three hours so I want to start with this dramatic intro. Everything worked until I got a new modem because I switched to another provider. Now nothing works.

With that dramatic intro out of the way, hi! My setup is (what I think anyway) very simple. I have a Mac mini running Plex and a smart tv (lg) running Plex client. Everything local, I don’t even care about remote (that’s a whole other can of worms with NordVPN and I don’t want to use docker).

My tv keeps saying it can’t find my local Plex server. Same modem, same subnet, no weird different routers or anything so no double nat. I don’t know why. I’ve reinstalled and rebooted everything. I’ve disabled vpn, even though I didn’t have to before the modem switch I tried anyway. I also tried adding the local ip address manually in the tv app. Going to the ip:port on WiFi works on my laptop and phone. All my server settings are default. I didn’t change a thing. Remote access is disabled (enabling it didn’t work either) and relay is disabled (I didn’t want false positives). What else can I try?

Can you access the server itself from a browser on the same machine?
Is your VPN configured on the router or your Mac?

Thank you for replying! I can access it yes, and on the mac itself. But I currently have nordvpn disabled to rule that out.

I tried some other things. I’ve replaced the cables, reset the modem, enabled upnp (because why not). No luck. Weirdly, I can access the server in the smart tv browser if I go to the ip address.

This lets me think that they can’t find each other, so it might be an issue with advertising (somehow)?

I’m almost certain it’s something to do with GDM. I found others complaining about something about broadcasting with the modem I have. There’s no fix, so what are my options? My media experience kinda sucks now.

im having the same problem on windows , cant access my media locally , only via remote access

On the server machine verify…

Start → Settings → Network & Internet → Properties

Make sure it’s set to Private

it is set to private

But I’m not on windows. Also it worked before I switched to a new modem. I don’t have any static ip addresses assigned.

I also just called my provider and they told me to try opening up ports and setup pinholing for ipv6. Do I need that for a local-only connection?

I’m having a similar issue, to summarize it seems as if plex is blocking my IP address from being able to login to their service. I’m trying to login on the same windows PC that I run the plex server on, but all of the sudden it’s giving me these connection issues. I can still see and access my plex server on the PC but logging into the site doesn’t work and the free movies and shows aren’t working as well.

When trying to login I get a message that says “Plex is not reachable We are unable to connect to plex.tv at this time. Please try again later.”. Additionally I’m unable to login to the plex app on two different 4K Fire tv sticks and a chomecast tv.

I tested this while running Nord VPN on the PC I have the Plex server on and everything worked (I think because it is now seeing a new IP instead). Then I used my smartphone as a hotspot for the fire tv stick and I was able to login to the plex app and play a movie. Everything seems to point to Plex blocking my IP for some reason.

not sure what to do from here.

same here
switched a modem and provider and it doesn’t work

I think some how my IP got flagged so what I just did was setup my Nord VPN at my router level so all my connected devices should work so far it’s working on the Windows PC I run my plex media server on, and on my fire tv 4k stick. Not a great solution but at least it’s working I’ve spent almost 2 days trying to fix this issue just to find out it’s at my IP address level I cannot explain any other cause based on my testing.

I’m going to try and see if I can power off my modem for 10 minutes to see if this assigns me a new IP when I turn it on again, not sure if that is how it works but read something about that being the way to get a new IP.

I will note that I do get a cloudflare message occasionally that I was blocked from signing in but it isn’t consistent. Either way that is what made me start testing different internet connections and they were working.

I cannot believe there isn’t a way to get tech help for stuff like this, at this point I’d pay for help lol better than losing hours of my life.

That doesn’t sound related to my issue. It’s a different problem. I do agree that it sucks to not be able to get technical help.

I was thinking if you switched ISP’s and the new IP you have is already flagged in some way and seeing if using a mobile hotspot or VPN fixes the problem (not really a fix just a way to narrow down the main issue).

i can access the server from the same machine. and no VPN

What do you mean by “flagged”? I’m 99% sure the issue is that the client doesn’t know the ip address of the server. Is there a way to set a fixed server ip address somewhere? Just tell the client, since GDM isn’t working?
