I have spent a fair amount of time searching for a solution to this, but I cannot find one and have had to resort to posting here:
I was previously able to sync items from my server to my Amazon Kindle Fire, iPad Air and iPhone. Now, I cannot sync or de-sync anything. I have ensured that all devices are updated, and I cannot find any setting related to Syncing on my PMS.
Really? No answer? I am a Plex Pass member, and this is the feature I (previously) used more than any other with my monthly subscription. Please advise, this is extremely irritating.
You need to be more specific. Are you trying from PlexWeb or from a client? Are you using the same user on all devices? Have you synced stuff before using Plex Home user in the app? You can only Sync for 1 user at a time.
Sorry, I should have made it clear, the only client I was able to sync on was PlexWeb, syncing is failing on all my other devices, of which I am the only user. (I have friends in my Friends list, but not as part of Plex Home, and there are restrictions on those shares)
My Plex Media Server is on my iMac, I did not make any changes to settings (as far as I know) that would have caused this issue.
(Edit: So I just realised that I can sync from my PMS to any of my devices, but I cannot do so by selecting Sync on the device - also, I have media on my iPhone that I previously synced to from my PMS without any problem, but my PMS does not recognize that that media is already synced)
I’m sorry, but you are still not be specific enough. Can we just work on 1 device. You say you have an iPhone. You first select what you want to sync (an entire library, individual movies, a specific show, season, or episodes). Which of these are you trying to sync? What screen are you on? When you hit the Sync button, what do you see? Does nothing happen? Go to the sync status page in the app, what do you see? Screenshots would be the easiest to explain what you see.
Ok, so I have made sure all my Plex apps are up-to-date. Re the iPhone app, I just tried syncing an episode of Deadliest Catch to it, and I was able this time to select the sync button. Looking at the status information on my Media Server (on my iMac) I can see that the video has been converted, but when I click on my iPnone in my list of devices, and then the video, it shows as ‘Waiting to be downloaded’, but there is no sign of any progress beyond this.
This also applies to my Amazon Fire Tablet and iPad Air.
(See screenshot)
Can you check from the devices themselves? There are settings in the apps that can prevent downloading such as restricting to download while only on WiFi. There is also a built in feature that it will not sync if the battery is below a certain level.
I have checked the ‘WiFi only’ options on both the iPhone, the Fire does not have cellular capability anyway.
I left the Fire plugged in to power overnight, and it has still not synced any of the items that I queued yesterday evening.
Ok, time for logs. Please hit the sync button on the device, wait a few minutes then grab the logs.
Ok, sorry folks, the solution was hiding in plain sight: once you select Sync next to the media on whichever Plex app you are using, you then have to go in to Settings on that app, then ‘Sync’, and Sync Status, then select ‘Download’ for the items which have just been optimised.
At least in the Android app, go to settings \ sync \ sync settings \ sync automatically and enable when you want the syncs to automatically occur, otherwise you do have to manually sync each time. There should be something similar in the iPhone app.
Actually no, I can’t see any similar option on iOS.
