Cannot Use "Act as Mobile Server" (Update: Further Windows App Work Unlikely)

There seems to be some heat over this application so if I may I’d like to open with a few positive words.

For most part (might be due to luck), the Plex App for Windows (and my mobile devices) has been very useful and besides the odd annoying network and random crash the app has help up for me.

That being said there is a feature of the application I cannot (for the life of me) get working anymore: the “Act as Mobile Server” option.

I have tried this on both a Windows 10 Desktop and Windows 10 Laptop, both with Plex from the Microsoft Store.

In terms of my server:

  • The operating system is TrueOS (FreeBSD) 12, and
  • Is running Plex Media Server 1.11.3.4803 (the highest available from the package repositories)

Now, I can stream content from the server to my devices (laptops, PCs, TV, etc) perfectly fine. No issues.

I can sync content to portable devices (tables, Windows 10 App version, mobile) perfectly fine. Again, no issues.

It’s the “Act as mobile server” option that has me confused.

On some devices, the machine in questions (desktop or laptop, it doesn’t matter) doesn’t appear.

On others (such as Plex for Android) the machine will appear but after selecting said machine, I’m eventually presented with the phrase “XXX is Unavailable”.

And yes, I have even tried disabling firewalls and checking the sub-net (first options I tried) but the problem remains.

First, is this a known issue? If so, is it on the road map for repair?

If not, is there something I need to consider when setting my sync and or application settings?

My thanks in advance.

UPDATE: 2019/04/28

To save some having to read further down, it looks like the answer has arrived.

Event though only an implied confirmation has been given, it strongly looks like there will be no further development on the Windows Store App version of Plex.

While I personally am staying on with my Pass (I use PVR and other features) it is still sad that the Windows Store App has fallen to the way side. It had shown a lot of promise and would have been a good staple of Windows if it only received maintenance updates and no feature additions.

Has there been any update to this issue. I just purchased a Plex Pass to use this exact feature and I’m experiencing the exact same problem.

Thanks,
-Brandon

Doesn’t look like it, I’m sorry to say.

I hope that at some point the Windows Store app does get an update to fix this.

It’s long over due for an update.

I’m having the same issue. I would like to find a solution. Currently, the only way I’m found is to install PMS on my laptop and bring over the raw content.

Bumping this up. I have the same issue here, syncing content to my iPad for offline use I would like to use it as a mobile server. However, web player does not see the iPad at all. Hope Plex staff can at least comment on the issue.

For those still watching this thread, there has been an update of sorts a while ago.

Needless to say, I have updated the original post but to sum up here it does not look like there will be further development on the Windows Store App anymore.

I used profanity in my original reply, because this is infuriating. Make this feature work, I bought a lifetime pass for it. In closing, be less terrible, you garbage people.
