Can't access bros server at faster then 2mbs

Server Version#:os windows
Player Version#:

My brother has a server with 4K video that I want to stream to my OLED TV. However the bit rate seems capped at 2mb/second when I stream from his server so I can’t get the full HD experience. Does it run know how to increase the bitrate?

As for troubleshooting…

  1. let’s verify your browser’s internet upload speed is indeed >2 Mbps – sounds silly… but you never know

  2. let your brother check his remote access configuration (Plex + router)… some limitations could be:

    • He has configured a per-stream bandwidth limitation in Settings > [Server Name] > Remote Access > Limit remote stream bitrate
    • He’s got a bad configuration that causes an indirect connection through a Plex relay server – those connections are indeed limited to 2 Mbps. This can happen if the client/server cannot establish a direct connection… usually due to a bad remote access configuration

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your message. To confirm:

A. Yes, the upload speed is above 2 ( it’s 100).
B. Yes, has configured those settings correctly to allow faster upload speeds. He is in California and has a friend that can get higher bit rates from his server in another state. I am in The UK but it doesn’t seem to work???

You’re right it is the Plex relay server that it defaults to that is causing the the bit rate to only be limited to 2mbs but we can’t figure out why.

What have you configured as remote streaming quality in the client you’re using?
Does it actually state it’s an indirect connection?

Hi Tom, thanks again for your help with this,

I’m using a Plex client server on a Sony a80j oled TV, and the settings show home streaming on maximum and remote streaming queue at 20 mb per second 1080p HD high

Yes it states it’s an indirect connection using Plex relay

In that case you need to ask your friend to go through the remote access troubleshooting.

Hi Tom, thanks for the link, yes we have all that covered and still no direct connection.

Interestingly when I VPN my client connection to a VPN server in the USA (where the Plex server is) we get a direct connection but when I VPN in the UK or other country outside the USA it defaults to a remote connection.

There must be some issue with direct connections with Plex outside the host country but can’t find anything in posts vonline that fixes it, I can see others have had the same problem in the forum with no solutions I can see.

The connection showing as „remote“ is to be expected… considering you’re not inside their home network.

If it’s showing as an indirect or relayed connection from everywhere outside the ID there might be some filtering from the side of your brother’s ISP.

Hi Tom, thanks again for your thoughts,

Apologies it should read indirect ie:

… outside the USA it defaults to a INDIRECT connection.

Re: filtering:

I’m not sure what that means but I’ve called my ISP (Virgin) and they think because there will be multiple servers required to get the connection, plex does not allow a direct connection because somewhere along the line the connection protocol defaults to an indirect connection.

My brother in California is calling up his Plex support to see if they can can sort the issue I’ll let you know what they say:nerd_face::+1:
