what would prevent someone from accessing my plex on their home internet. When connected to their wifi you can’t connect. If you turn wifi off and use cellular data you are able to connect… please help.
Usually the remote user’s ISP or their router (or both) can be blamed for this.
-
Some ISPs are implementing very strict blocking lists, which for some reason do also include the top-level-domain
.direct.
But your server is getting a host name on the.plex.directsubdomain and all access with Plex clients is using it. -
Some ISPs are neglecting to update their own DNS resolvers frequently enough, so that an attempt to contact your server using its FQDN cannot succeed.
Point 1): dive into the settings of the router or the firewall for the client’s network. Seek for “filtering” of domain names or “blacklists”. Disable them or (preferably) create exception rules for the domains plex.direct and plex.tv
Point 2): edit the settings of the router or the network firewall (in home networks this is usually the same device) to change the used “DNS server” away from the ISP’s to the publicly available from Google (8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4)
If there are other security software or “security appliances” in use, dive down into their settings as well and make the above changes.
Could be VPN… This may help.
