Hey all! I know that there’s been many similar posts about this, but reading the forums and following the various recommendations has not helped me regain access. I recently switched to AT&T and was given a BGW210-700 router/gateway. I’m running my PMS on a Synology DSM218+ which worked fine on my previous router/modem. Now when I go to the server’s address I’m shown this:
In the router settings I’ve done the NAT/Gaming port forwarding:
I’ve seen people mention changing the plex port, but I can’t even access my server to make that change! Any help would be appreciated. I’m losing my mind trying to get this working. I also tried the IP passthrough mentioned on these forums without success. I welcome any and all recommendations!
Port Forwarding is only for remote access. It has no effect on local access to the NAS.
Local access must be working correctly before attempting remote access.
The address of the NAS is 192.168.1.22, correct?
From a system on the same network, use a private/incognito browser window and go to http://192.168.1.22:32400/web. This should let you access Plex Media Server locally.
Verify the Default Gateway setting for the NAS (DSM Control Panel → Network). Make sure the Default Gateway is the same address as the AT&T router (assuming you have no other routers in your network). Different ISPs use different default gateway addresses. Some use .1 and some use .254.
Verify the DNS Server settings for the NAS. It should not be pointing to the DNS of your old ISP. Also, some ISP’s DNS have trouble resolving plex.tv addresses. I’m not aware of any issues with AT&T’s DNS servers, but you may want to try using public DNS servers such as Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4), Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), or Quad9 (9.9.9.9).
Thanks for including the DSM version. You would have been asked had you not mentioned it.
Please verify the installed version of Plex Media Server via DSM Package Center.
So after some looking I figured out that the problem was that I could connect to my Synology NAS over the network, but that the NAS itself couldn’t connect to the internet or obtain any kind of external access. I called AT&T and they setup IP passthrough by changing these settings:
On my Synology NAS I also changed my IP from static to dynamic (not sure how much of a role this played in making it work, but I’m including it here for completeness sake).
To make this change I went to Control Panel > Network > Network Interface. I then chose my LAN and clicked “edit”.
I then changed from “use manual configuration” to “Get network configuration automatically”.
And… IT WORKS! Note that you don’t have to do the port forwarding on the router if you do IP passthrough since all ports will be open. This means you don’t need the forwarding you might have previously performed under Firewall > NAT/Gaming
