Can't authenticate or sign in to server, or plex.tv

I can’t seem to authenticate my server and plex.tv times out each time I try and load the site. The following is the error message from this morning, does anyone recognize it?

HTTP 408 error means timeout

So you have a network issue here

Thanks for the info! I’ve seen around the forums that changing my router’s DNS server may help in some situations? Is that a relevant thing to try here?

Or maybe more generally, how would I go about pinpointing where the issue is? I’ve turned my VPN off and tried turning all firewalls off. If the rest of the internet works, I assume my ISP isn’t the issue, but I’m not sure what to change in my router or modem, if anything?

You can check the status of Plex’s systems at https://status.plex.tv/.

If you continue having DNS timeout problems, you might try setting your PMS to use a public DNS instead of your ISP. Example: Google is 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4. There are many others. Search for “public dns.”

I have tried multiple public and isp-assigned DNS servers, none of them will let plex.tv load. I’ve tried downgrading my router firmware, adding and re-adding Plex firewall exceptions. Any other ideas?

Sounds like your ISP is blocking you somehow

Thanks for the reply, I was slowly coming to the same conclusion. Is there a way that I could determine that so when I call them I might have some ideas what I’m talking about?

From a cell, on your wireless, try…
From a cell, not on your wireless, try…

The site and authentication server work on a cellular network but not on my wireless network. That’s how I’m logging into the forums and making these posts.

Are you posting to the forum from the same system that is running PMS?

If not, are you using a system on the same local network (behind the same router, using same NAT, etc)?

I thought, maybe incorrectly, that plex.tv, Plex Web, the forum, etc all used the same authentication system.

I’m wondering how you can login to the forum but not to Plex Web, https://app.plex.tv/desktop.

Hello FordGuy, I think I may have posted my previous answer as you were typing yours. When I connect my phone to my home wireless network, I can’t log on to PMS or Plex.TV. when I disconnect the wireless and use a cellular network, I can log into both Plex.TV and the forums.

Yep. Typing at the same time.

So ISP issue 4 sure

Who is your ISP btw?

CenturyLink fiber.

Can you ping or traceroute to app.plex.tv or forums.plex.tv?
Might be helpful when talking with CenturyLink support.

c:\ tracert -4 forums.plex.tv
# traceroute -4 -T forums.plex.tv (if on linux)

I’ll leave this thread now, since you seem to be on top of it

Man, simply loves this community

I tried nslookup on app.plex.tv and all three commands ended correctly. However, when I try on plex.tv all the pings and tracerts time out. I’m still on my phone so I’m trying to get the exact results copied and posted.

Don’t worry about plex.tv trace. I see same. Probably blocked by hosting location, which is common.

Still seems like an ISP problem. Might call Century Link and see if they can help.
