I have Plex Pass and was using Plex server on Nvidia Shield TV for a long time. All of a sudden it stopped working and after many attempts, I uninstalled it, removed from my account and tried to reinstall the Plex server on Shield. As we all know, there is no option on Google Play Store to choose Plex Server, there is only one “Plex”. So I installed Plex on the Shield. On launching the Plex for the first time after the reinstall, it prompted to setup as server which I chose. It goes through the permission step and tries to configure the server but then fails with an error: “Something went wrong… Try again”.
Since I can’t go beyond this step, I am not sure what versions are being installed either.
I love Plex and Shield and the combination of the two but am stuck. Any help?
Unless things have changed I remember that Plex comes as a preinstalled app on the Shield and could not be removed although it could be reset and data removed. All I had to do was run Plex from the main screen and choose the “install server” option from the initial start up screen.
Once, when things went hideously wrong, I even did a factory reset of the Shield itself and, after the reset finished, I simply chose Plex from the main menu and installed the server as before. To install Plex on my Shield I never had to use the app store.
I suspect that the version you installed is conflicting with the preinstalled one.
Would you be able to confirm the version of the PMS server on your Shield? There was a recent update to fix an issue with the initial setup of PMS on the Shield. You are able to find the “PMS” app by viewing all apps in the Shield settings under “Plex Media Server”. You can also try clearing the data of this app and trying to setup again.
Thanks @morganj for your response. My PMS version is 9.29.1.3463. I reset my nvidia Shield to factory default, reinstalled Plex (the only one plex option) from Google Store. Then opened the Plex and chose to config it as server and it fails as described earlier. Should I be doing something else?
When you reset your Shield you should not go into the Google store as Plex come preinstalled. All you should have to do is access the Plex app that is already installed and select the “Install server” option and proceed from there.
I do not know for sure anymore as things change and, even tough my Shield has the Plex app I have not, within the last year or two, used my Shield as a server as I found it to be woefully under powered for my fairly large library and the way I use it.
It is possible something has changed that makes the Shield unstable as a server but I do not think so. Just do NOT install Plex from the Google store, use the preinstalled app and go from there.
One more thing: If you have other apps you want to use and you want the use you Shield as a Plex server I strongly suggest you get Plex running correctly before installing anything else. In general Plex is likely to need most of the Shield’s processing power during initial setup.
Thank you both. Since @BeattifulCadaver said that they did not have to install Plex from the store, I reset my Shield to factory default once again and noticed that there were two plex apps - player and server - that nvidia was installing. So just continued with that and once Shield was ready, searched for and opened Plex (without installing from the store this time). It went as smooth as Plex always did.
I always loved Plex (hence I have Plex Pass) and Plex community too.
