Server Version#: 1.22.2.4282
Player Version#: 4.56.4
Shut down shield device and added media to server drives. Reconnected and started the Nvidia Shield but the Plex Server is not loading. When running the plex app on the Shield device, on the settings screen, under the heading “Plex Media Server” where it usually shows an icon for the server and an icon for storage, their is nothing. I can ping the ip address of the server, and can access all other features on the Shield device, but can not figure out how to force the Plex server to load. Please help.
I’ve a 2015 Shield Pro with the 500 GB internal drive. This procedure worked for me. All settings, libraries, etc are lost (when PMS data is cleared), so it is like setting the server up for the first time. My media files on my NAS were not touched.
Using Google Play Store app, update to latest version of Plex server & client.
In Shield settings, force stop Plex Media Server (listed under system apps), clear data, then open the server. That will launch the Plex client. You should see the PMS icon in settings and be able to proceed with setup.
Go through the setup process. When asked if you want to create libraries in the default location, answer yes (check the box). If I answered “no,” setup failed.
This started Plex Media Server for me. I then stop/started it several times via Plex client settings an the icon never disappeared. I was also able to move Plex data to a different location.
Wow, thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I already tried to update the media server app from Google Play Store, but as I already have the latest beta version it will only let me uninstall. I am going to go try your other suggestions now, but if they fail I guess I will have to Uninstall then reinstall the media server from the google store? Thanks again.
I only mentioned the update because a) I’m assuming (maybe incorrectly) this is a Plex, not Nvidia, problem; b) I don’t know in which PMS version the problem appeared; and c) I don’t know in which PMS version the problem was fixed, but d) it is fixed, at least for me, in the current version.
I tried that first and it didn’t work.
On my Shield, uninstalling reverts to the version that came from the factory. It does not uninstall PMS.
After I uninstalled (reverted), I could start the server, etc. However, once I upgraded to the current version, then stopped the server, the problem re-occurred.
It appears the key is to a) be on the current release, and b) delete the server data.
Well, I was quite excited to find the Settings/Apps/Plex settings that let me force stop the server. Which indicated to me that it thought it was running to some extent. I stopped it, cleared the date, and restarted it. But in the server still does not appear in the apps settings window. Trying to reach if from the web app on my local network, it says that server is not available. I’m going to look at the setting a little more, but it looks like i might have to uninstall and reinstall the media server. I will wait a bit in case you reply back either with other suggestions or let me know if you think the reinstall is a good idea.
I absolutely agree. I believe it has to do with Plex not Shield. I will tinker with it a bit more. Oh, and after getting the shield which I purchased for just this use, I found that I had to upgrade to the beta version of Plex to get it to work at all. Which is fine, but I don’t want to get into a situation when I can’t install the beta version.
Anyway, thanks for the help. I’ll play with it for a while and see what I can figure out.
You probably already knew this but I did not. For the sake of anyone else who reads this.
There are 2 Plex’s running on your Shield, which is not obvious as only one, Plex (the player), is listed under setup apps.
To get to the server app do the following from you Shield Home.
Click “Settings”
Click “Apps”
Click “See All Apps” (Scroll down if necessary)
Click “Show System Apps” (again scroll to the bottom to find this selection)
The list of System Apps is long but it is alphabetical, so scroll down to the P’s and find “Plex Media Server”.
That said, I cleared the cache and force restarted to no affect. I will try reinstalling it next.
OK, that kinda fixed it. I deleted the data, which cause it to enter setup mode the next time the server started, like a new installation. That al went well but no I will have to let all the libraries rebuild (almost 12 terabytes of media), it will take days. I know the database backs itself up once every 3 days. I might be able to figure out how to restore the database from a backup. But the server is fixed. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction.
I had the same problem and I reinstalled the server. When I did that it fixed the problem, the tab “Plex Media Server” already had the usual options. But today i restarted my nvidia shield and now I have the same problem all over again. Can someone tell me if this problem occurs every time the nvidia shield is restarted/turned off? Maybe a plex media server update originated this problem? In the past I’ve never had this issue. This is very inconvenient since every time i reinstall the server I have to scan again the hundreds of movies that I have in several libraries .
Hi, there.
Same problem here.
Has anybody found a solution for this problem yet? I followed all the instructions here and i still have the same problem.
Plex server won’t start in the plex app.
So far I have:
Updated both apps.
Uninstall and installed back both apps.
Current versions in the google play store
(PMS v1.23.4.4805. Plex app 8.20.1.26670)
Forced stopped the PMS clear data.
Run setup again.
Restarted it and nothing.
I noticed that when I rub the setup, in the part were it starts the server for the first time it fails.
Then i do it again and it goes through.
But server stills stopped.
The only thing left for me to do is to factory reset the shield which I don’t want to.
Am I missing something out?
All started 3 days ago. All was good before that.
Idk if it was an update or something.
Please help!!!
I looked everywhere but there are only old posts.
Which since then there have beeb lots of updates.
Thanks in advance…
